Job description

Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) is a private technology company that designs, develops and operates space camera systems for government and commercial aerospace customers and provides services in spacecraft instrument operations and space science research.ย We are offering a uniqueย Engineering Internshipย program that provides college students an opportunity to work alongside experts in their field. Interns will engage with a multidisciplinary team working on space camera systems for demanding missions. Interns will be mentored by professionals in their discipline, gaining hands-on experience and technical growth.
Opportunity
  • Hands-on Experience:ย Work directly on real-world space mission projects.
  • Skill Development:ย Gain experience in engineering design, testing, and troubleshooting, while developing professional presence and technical expertise.
  • Mentorship:ย Be mentored by industry professionals who will guide your technical and career development.
  • Final Presentation:ย Interns will showcase their work and accomplishments in a final presentation to the Camera Systems Group.

Essential Functions
  • Support the design, testing, and integration of space camera systems for planetary and interplanetary missions.
  • Contribute to projects that support flight programs, internal research and development (IRAD), or improve production and test capabilities.
  • Work directly with a mentor from your discipline and report to the Managing Engineer.
    Complete project-focused tasks with defined educational goals and deliverables.
  • Participate in weekly progress check-ins and provide a final presentation on your work.

Non-Essential Functions
  • Performs other duties as required or requested which may become essential to this position.

Program Details
  • 8 weeks,ย ย 15 June through 14 August, 2026
  • Full-time (8:30 am โ€“ 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday)
  • Hourly, non-exempt, temporary positionย 
  • Interns are responsible for their own accommodations
  • This internship is not coordinated with academic institutions and does not provide academic credit

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in Engineering program in a 4-year institution in one of the following disciplines: Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Linux and PC literacy required.
  • Python fluency required.
  • Solid experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic math and strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must be detail oriented and dependable with strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
Pay Range: $25/hr
Physical Requirements
Must be able to comprehend and communicate complex technical and engineering concepts. Must be able to remain in a stationary position while operating a computer for prolonged periods of time.ย Ability to work and move around in a cleanroom environment, wearing required outer garments including smock/coveralls, shoe covers, mask, hood and gloves.ย Moves in and around a lab space. Ability to handle high stress levels in connection with multiple conflicting priorities and deadlines. High tolerance for ambiguity and shifting expectations. Strong analytical andย organizational skills with ability to prioritize workload.
