Overview
Beyond New Horizons, LLC (BNH) has an exciting opportunity for an Instrumentation, Data and Controls (ID&C) Engineer supporting TOS II, at Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) at Arnold AFB, TN. The ID&C Engineer will work as a member of an integrated team responsible for operating and maintaining the United States Air Force Test Operations efforts at AEDC.
This position requires occasional scheduled extended hours and/or weekend work to meet critical contractual requirements and occasional unscheduled night or weekend support in emergency situations.
Job Summary
The individual hired for this position will function as an ID&C Engineer supporting test operations, system/maintenance engineering, and/or design engineering for systems used in one or more of the various test facilities in the AEDC complex. Core responsibilities of this role include providing engineering support for any combination of the listed types of systems:
  • Instrumentation and data acquisition systems used to make complex and highly accurate physical measurements of parameters associated with the article under test and/or the test facility
  • Motion control systems for precision positioning of the test article in the test environment
  • Facility and process control systems to control the test article and supplementary systems
  • Plant process control systems to measure and ensure delivery of specified test conditions by implementing closed loop control of complex systems of motors, valves, compressors, hydraulics, pneumatics, etc.

ID&C Engineers will apply theoretical concepts and equations of electronics, signal processing, motion, control theory, and various software and computer skills in fulfilling the listed job duties.
This ID&C Engineering position will be deployed to the Space & Missiles and/or Hypersonics Test Facilities; however, ID&C Engineers may be reassigned to other areas based on workload demands and mission needs. ID&C Engineers may also support multiple test areas/facilities as required.
Job Duties:
ID&C Engineers at AEDC are critical to the execution of the test mission. Specifically, duties for this entry-level position include:
  • Perform work, generally within Instrumentation, Data Acquisition, and/or Control System Engineering, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment with relatively few complex features.
  • Participate in one or more of the following:
    • Application and support of ID&C systems in preparation for and during active ground test operations.
    • System troubleshooting and return-to-service
    • Development of system requirements
    • Preparation of specifications and design calculations
    • ID&C System design, development, lifecycle system engineering and/or system application and maintenance.
    • System design, including concept sketches and layouts
    • Automated Control and Human Machine Interface (HMI) Software Development
    • Preparing designs, drawings and data under supervision of more experienced engineering staff
    • Preparation of engineering studies and reports
    • Preparation of material quantity estimates
    • Uses computer aided design/computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) tools
    • System Verification and Validation Test Development/Execution
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, under the mentorship of senior engineering staff.
  • Perform assignments, which have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for ID&C Engineering; supports the use of common work processes and procedures within assigned function across the TOS contract.
  • Draft letters for replies to vendor correspondence.
  • Monitor and meet applicable work schedules.
  • Review design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a low to moderate degree of complexity and prepare comments and recommendations.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree focusing on Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics or other related engineering or scientific field and zero (0) to four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance and access to DoD network and computer systems
  • Current U. S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active DoD secret or higher-level security clearance
  • Developmental experience such as internships, co-op assignments, senior/capstone projects, prior work experience, etc. in one or more of the following:
    • Transducers, sensors, electrical circuits, signal processing, and data acquisition systems used to measure temperature, pressure, force, flow, acceleration, vibration, and other physical phenomena common to aerospace systems testing.
    • Control system theory and design concepts such as Controls Strategy and Algorithm Development, Math Modeling/Simulations, Calibration, Motion Controls, Process Controls, Process Instrumentation, Sequencing Systems, Stability & Control, Servomechanisms, Systems Safety, Networks & Field Busses, Control System Optimization, Learning and Rule-based Systems
  • Excellent communication and team interaction skills.
  • Mathematical or computer expertise or a combination of the same.
