What is an internship in competitive programming?

An internship in competitive programming is a structured work experience for students or recent graduates that focuses on developing algorithmic problem-solving skills, programming proficiency, and familiarity with coding competitions. Interns typically work on challenging coding problems, participate in contests, and may help design or test problems for competitions. Such internships are often offered by tech companies, educational organizations, or competitive programming platforms, and can provide valuable experience for careers in software engineering or related fields.

What types of projects or challenges can I expect to work on during a competitive programming internship?

During a Competitive Programming internship, you can expect to tackle algorithmic challenges, optimize solutions for efficiency, and participate in problem-solving sessions, often as part of a team. Interns frequently work on creating or testing problems for contests, developing tools or scripts to support competition platforms, and collaborating closely with experienced programmers to review and debug code. These experiences not only strengthen your coding skills but also familiarize you with real-world applications of algorithms and team-based development workflows. Exposure to peer code reviews and regular feedback sessions is also common, helping you grow both technically and professionally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship competitive programming?

To thrive as an Internship Competitive Programming, you need a solid grasp of algorithms, data structures, and strong problem-solving abilities, often demonstrated through participation in programming contests and relevant coursework. Familiarity with coding platforms like Codeforces, LeetCode, or HackerRank, and proficiency in languages such as C++, Java, or Python, are typically expected. Analytical thinking, perseverance, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that distinguish top candidates in this role. These skills are crucial for quickly solving complex problems, collaborating effectively, and excelling in high-pressure, time-sensitive environments.

Department: Engineering
Reports To: Senior Electrical Design Engineer / Engineering Manager
Compensation: $60,000 – $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience

Note:  When responding to the applciation questions, if you're resume does not support the answers submitted to the questions you will not be considered.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated Junior Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team specializing in control systems for material handling and conveyor applications. This is a great opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career engineer to develop their electrical design skills in a structured, project-driven environment alongside experienced engineers.

In this role, you will support the development of electrical design packages — including schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials — using AutoCAD Electrical. You will receive direct guidance from senior engineers while taking on increasing responsibility as your skills grow. A strong foundation in electrical fundamentals, a sharp eye for detail, and a desire to learn industrial design practices are the keys to success here.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Schematic Design

  • Assist in the development of electrical design packages including power distribution one-line diagrams, motor control schematics, I/O wiring diagrams, and field device wiring details using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Produce panel layout drawings including din rail arrangements, wire duct routing, terminal block assignments, and enclosure configurations under the direction of senior engineers
  • Maintain drawing numbering, revision logs, and project drawing registers
  • Perform self-verification checks on completed drawings prior to senior review

BOM & Documentation Support

  • Assist in developing Bills of Materials (BOMs) for control panels and field instrumentation based on design specifications and component libraries
  • Support purchasing and fabrication teams by organizing drawing packages and responding to basic drawing questions
  • Assist in maintaining as-built drawing packages upon project completion
  • Help prepare Description of Operation (DOO) documents and other project deliverables under senior engineer direction

Standards & File Management

  • Follow internal electrical design standards, schematic templates, title block conventions, and component libraries within AutoCAD Electrical
  • Manage project drawing files within Autodesk Vault, including check-in/check-out, revision control, and folder organization
  • Flag design questions or discrepancies to senior engineers promptly

Learning & Development

  • Develop familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards including NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 79, and UL 508A
  • Build working knowledge of industrial control system components — PLCs, VFDs, motor starters, safety relays, photoelectric sensors, and proximity switches
  • Actively participate in design reviews and internal engineering meetings to build project and product knowledge

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET), or closely related field
  • 0–2 years of professional experience in electrical design or industrial automation; internship or co-op experience in a relevant field is a plus
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical or demonstrated ability to learn it quickly; coursework or personal project experience accepted
  • Basic understanding of electrical fundamentals — circuits, power distribution, motor control, and wiring practices
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, organized work
  • Ability to follow established design standards and take direction from senior engineers
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD Electrical through coursework, internship, or professional work
  • Exposure to industrial control system components such as PLCs, VFDs, contactors, or field sensors
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Vault or other document management systems
  • Basic understanding of control panel construction standards (UL 508A) or electrical codes (NEC)
  • Any exposure to conveyor systems, material handling equipment, or parcel handling applications
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation hardware

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based design role
  • Occasional visits to panel fabrication facilities or customer sites for design verification (minimal travel)
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods during design work
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Structured mentorship and on-the-job training from experienced electrical design engineers
  • Clear path for growth into a full Electrical Design Engineer role
  • Collaborative engineering team with a strong project delivery track record

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
