Internship Code Review information

What is an internship code review?

An Internship Code Review is a process where the code written by interns is systematically examined by more experienced developers or mentors. The goal is to ensure code quality, provide constructive feedback, and help interns learn best practices in software development. Code reviews help catch bugs, improve maintainability, and encourage collaboration within teams. For interns, participating in code reviews is a valuable opportunity to grow technical and communication skills in a real-world setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship code reviewer?

To thrive as an Internship Code Reviewer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, version control systems like Git, and experience with relevant coding languages, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with code review platforms such as GitHub or GitLab and knowledge of testing frameworks are typically essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a collaborative attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality, maintainable code and foster learning and growth within development teams.

What types of feedback can I expect to give and receive during an internship code review role?

As an intern participating in code reviews, you will both give and receive constructive feedback on code quality, readability, and adherence to best practices. Expect to learn how to identify potential bugs, suggest improvements, and discuss design decisions with your peers and mentors. You'll also receive guidance on your own code submissions, helping you develop technical skills and a collaborative mindset. This process is highly interactive and designed to foster growth, communication, and teamwork within a supportive environment.

Job description

At IBM, you'll learn from experienced technology professionals while gaining hands‑on experience with Salesforce application development and consulting practices.

During your internship, you may have opportunities to:

  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work with cross‑functional teams to learn how requirements are gathered, support the definition of technical solutions, and contribute to project delivery under the guidance of experienced professionals.
  • Support Solution Design & Documentation: Assist in preparing technical specifications and documenting design decisions to support effective communication and collaboration.
  • Contribute to High‑Quality Software: Develop and test code with guidance, participate in code reviews, and learn software quality practices that support scalable, reusable solutions.
  • Develop Salesforce Applications: Contribute to Salesforce‑based customer relationship management (CRM) solutions and customer engagement platforms across sales, service, and marketing, while learning to apply development practices that support user experience, performance, security, and quality.

As part of the Business Applications / Salesforce practice, you will gain hands‑on experience supporting the development of Salesforce CRM solutions, customer engagement platforms, and sales, service, and marketing transformation initiatives.

You don't need experience with every technology listed. Many interns join IBM with a foundation in computer science, software engineering, or related technical disciplines and develop specialized expertise through mentorship, structured learning, certifications, hands‑on projects, and AI‑enabled tools.

Throughout your internship, you'll gain exposure to software engineering, cloud technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), DevOps, Agile, and Salesforce enterprise application development, while working with experienced engineers, architects, and technology professionals on real client projects across multiple industries.

We're not looking for experts; we hire for potential, curiosity, and a passion for learning.

High‑performing interns may be considered for full‑time Associate opportunities following graduation, based on business needs and individual performance.

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Interest in software development, application engineering, cloud technologies, Artificial Intelligence, automation, or digital transformation.
  • Basic understanding of programming concepts and experience with at least one programming language such as Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, C++, or similar technologies.
  • Basic understanding of software development principles, object‑oriented programming, algorithms, data structures, databases, APIs, and problem‑solving concepts.
  • Exposure to software development, web development, cloud technologies, databases, or technical problem‑solving through coursework, academic projects, hackathons, student organizations, research, open‑source contributions, or personal learning.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, automation, cybersecurity, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Experience gained through academic projects, internships, hackathons, student organizations, research, volunteer experiences, IBM SkillsBuild, certifications, or other practical learning opportunities.

You don't need to be an expert to get started. We're looking for individuals with a strong foundation, a growth mindset, and a desire to learn and make an impact.

Bring your curiosity. Grow your skills. Build what's next, like an IBMer.

  • Exposure to software development, cloud technologies, web applications, enterprise platforms, or modern application development through coursework, student projects, hackathons, research, open‑source contributions, or internship experiences.
  • Familiarity with Git, APIs, databases, Agile development, DevOps concepts, cloud platforms, user interface frameworks, or software engineering best practices.
  • Interest in Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, automation, enterprise application development, consulting, and continuous learning.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teammates while supporting application modernization and digital transformation initiatives.
