What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Intern, you need foundational programming knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and coursework or experience in computer science. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and common programming languages such as Python or Java is expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help you adapt quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These skills and qualities are important because they enable you to support development teams, learn rapidly, and deliver value during your internship.

What types of projects and tasks are typically assigned to an Internship Code Monkey, and how do these contribute to team goals?

As an Internship Code Monkey, you can expect to work on a variety of programming tasks such as debugging, writing unit tests, and implementing small features or enhancements under supervision. These assignments are designed to support the development team’s progress while providing you with hands-on experience in real-world codebases. Collaborating with senior developers and participating in code reviews help you learn best practices and integrate your work into larger projects. This role is a valuable stepping stone, offering a close-up look at professional software development processes and team dynamics.

What is an Internship Code Monkey?

An Internship Code Monkey is an entry-level intern who primarily writes code under the guidance of more experienced software developers. The role typically involves handling routine programming tasks, debugging, and implementing straightforward features or fixes. It is a learning position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in software development. Code Monkeys often work on tasks that help free up senior developers for more complex work, while also building their own technical skills.

Is CodeMonkey better than scratch?

For an Internship Code Monkey role, Scratch and CodeMonkey are both beginner-friendly platforms for learning programming concepts. Scratch uses a visual block-based interface suitable for early learners, while CodeMonkey offers more structured coding exercises in languages like JavaScript. The choice depends on the skill level and learning goals of the intern, with Scratch often serving as an introduction and CodeMonkey providing more coding practice.

iFLIP4 is the brand and network for people who care. Our brand, called The Charitable Brand, donates over half of its profits to the charity of your choice. Our network is the place you go to learn about the issues that plague our planet, and to discover the solutions to them. iFLIP4 educates. It inspires. It empowers, all in the name of the world's greatest causes--and the best part: it's driven by you.

We have been featured in the New York Post and we are the recipients of the C.V. Starr Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship.

We have hundreds of iFLIP4 Ambassadors (campus representatives) on 50+ college and high school campuses in the US, UK, and Canada and has been visited by over 140+ different countries.

Job Description

We want to change the world. We're a team of fast-executing social entrepreneurs on a mission to build the future of social change. You want to change the world? This is your chance!

We're not looking for someone to do busy work or implement another Rails app. We are searching for an outstanding back end developer to build our business with! We want someone who sees iFLIP4 in its Beta stages, and who can envision a future where it is the place to go for EVERYONE who cares. We want someone who wants to create the future, not someone who will settle for an unfulfilling position at a giant corporation.

We don't want a code monkey; we don't want someone to say yes and implement every feature we ask for. What we want is a partner. Someone to bounce ideas off of, someone with a vision for the future of our company, and someone who has the desire and drive to make it a reality.

Importantly, the most driven, high performing interns will be given the opportunity to take on full time roles after we raise our Angel round of funding.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain and update the current Beta website on a regular basis

  2. Support our current functional design, and help build code from scratch to support new, world-changing product features

  3. Create modules for ExpressionEngine

  4. Implement various API's as needed

  5. Author technical documentation with high level design documents

  6. Work closely with our product and design teams to define feature specifications

Technical Requirements

  1. Obtained or working towards MS/BE/BTech degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or other technical field preferred

  2. Strong coding and scripting ability on LAMP platform (PHP 5+, OOP PHP)

  3. Solid GNU/Linux experience

  4. Expert in ExpressionEngine (our CMS platform), and the ability to build add-ons & modules for ExpressionEngine

  5. Solid database experience. MySQL preferred

  6. Proven ability to work effectively across multiple teams

  7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  8. CodeIgniter knowledge a plus

  9. Experience with Cloud Computing a plus
