Internship Chemical Engineering R&D positions focus on research, experimentation, and development in labs, often for students or recent graduates. Chemical Process Engineers work in industrial settings, optimizing and managing chemical production processes. While both roles require a chemical engineering background, internships are more educational and exploratory, whereas process engineering involves operational responsibilities.

What is an Internship in Chemical Engineering R&D?

An Internship in Chemical Engineering R&D is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work alongside professional engineers and scientists to develop, test, and improve chemical processes, products, or technologies. Interns typically assist with laboratory experiments, data analysis, and research documentation, gaining practical experience in industrial research and development settings. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world applications of chemical engineering, enhances problem-solving skills, and often helps students decide on future career paths within the field.

What types of projects do interns typically work on in a Chemical Engineering R&D internship?

As a Chemical Engineering R&D intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects, such as assisting with laboratory experiments, analyzing data from pilot-scale processes, and supporting the development of new chemical products or processes. Interns often collaborate with experienced engineers and scientists, gaining exposure to both experimental and computational methods. You'll likely participate in team meetings, contribute to technical reports, and help troubleshoot experimental setups, providing valuable experience in both independent and group work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Chemical Engineering R&D, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Chemical Engineering R&D, you need a solid understanding of chemical engineering principles, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, typically gained through academic coursework in chemical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety protocols, and software such as MATLAB or Aspen Plus is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure effective experimentation, accurate data interpretation, and productive collaboration within research teams.

This role operates on a Monday to Friday schedule and requires flexibility for travel, on-call responsibilities, and adjusted hours as needed to support operational demands.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for SECURE Redwater chemical treatment and neutralization processes
  • Deliver facility training and contribute to ongoing program development to drive continuous improvement across Redwater operations.
  • Receive, log, prepare, and analyze client samples, including but not limited to acids, bases, oils, water, and produced fluids.
  • Perform bench-scale neutralizations of acids and bases, then support operations for large-scale neutralization.
  • Support training and competency development, as well as the ongoing review and development of operational SOPs.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and ensure operational readiness of all equipment.
  • Mentor the operations team and support high-performance treatment and neutralization practices, including chemical purchasing and inventory management.

  • 3–5 years of experience in waste management, environmental services, or related environments.
  • Experience supporting quality compliance programs, SOP development, and operational quality systems.
  • Diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related field considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of ASTM quality determination, hydrocarbon testing, sampling systems (API 8.2), and blending practices.
  • Valid H2S Alive and First Aid certification.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Safety-focused, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel, work flexible hours, and support on-call requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract required.
