Job description

The IT Business Analyst Intern will support the University of Virginia's Identity and Access Management (IAM) Operations team byassistingwith a variety of operational and project-based initiatives. Working closely with the IAM Operations team, the intern will help analyze business processes, supporttestingand process improvements, and contribute to initiatives that enhance identity lifecycle management and access governance.

This internshipprovidesan opportunity to gain hands-on experience with enterprise Identity and Access Management practices while gaining exposure to platforms such asFischer Identity and Grouper.The intern will collaborate with technical and business stakeholders,participatein day-to-day operational activities, and contribute to projects that improve the efficiency, accuracy, and user experience of IAM services across the University.

Student interns will work under the supervision of IAMIdentifyServices and Solutionsstaff. Core responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, update, and maintain IAM process documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides.
  • Assistin developing and executing test plans, test scripts, and validation activities based on business and technical requirements.
  • Support reconciliation efforts tovalidateidentity data and target system attributes for accuracy and consistency.
  • Assistwith the bi-annual IAM Security Group Audit by coordinating with stakeholders tovalidateaccess and support least-privilege access controls.
  • Generate and analyze identity reports, queries, and operational metrics to support decision-making and process improvements.
  • Develop an understanding of the identity lifecycle, including identity creation, role assignments, access changes, and deprovisioning.
  • Assistwith theusermatch process by collaborating with multiple UVA departments to verify,validate, and resolve identity data discrepancies.
  • Help investigate and resolve identity data processing issues and support the Operations team with escalated requests.
  • Coordinate andparticipatein system testing tovalidateFischer Identity functionality and support platform upgrades and new feature deployments.
  • Review monthly sponsored account reports to verify that accounts have an assigned sponsor and validexpirationdate, supporting IAM governance and compliance.
  • Build andmaintainpositive working relationships with university departments and stakeholders to support identity management processes, data integrity, and operational excellence.
  • Gain hands-on experience with enterprise Identity and Access Management technologies, including Fischer Identity and Grouper, while supporting operational initiatives and continuous process improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Current University of Virginia undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently after training while contributing effectivelyina collaborative team environment.
  • Experience creating andmaintainingclear,accuratedocumentation with a high degree of consistency.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and committed to delivering high-quality work.
  • Willingness to use approved mobile applications on a personal device, ifrequiredfor business purposes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts, including identity lifecycle management, provisioning, deprovisioning, and access governance.
  • Experience gathering and documenting business requirements, user stories, use cases, functional specifications, system requirements,andtest cases.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Experience with software quality assurance (QA), including developing and executingfunctional, integration, performance, and user acceptance testing.
  • Familiarity with business process analysis, process improvement, and workflow documentation.
  • Strong interest in cybersecurity, identity management, enterprise IT operations, or business analysis.

Training & Support Provided

Interns will receive paid training covering:

  • Comprehensive onboarding to the Identity and Access Management (IAM) Operations team.
  • Hands-on training in IAM concepts, identity lifecycle management, and access governance.
  • Training on UVA's IAM operational processes, tools, and workflows.
  • Ongoing mentorship and guidance from experienced IAM team members.
  • Collaborative work environment with opportunities to work alongside cross-functional teams and University stakeholders.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
