Job description

The Medical Billing & Collections Specialist - Tier II performs advanced billing, reimbursement, and A/R accounting functions to support the financial operations of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) healthcare organization. This position handles billing for diverse service lines-including medical, DME (Durable Medical Equipment), grant-funded programs, and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs)-and ensures compliance with payer, grant, and nonprofit accounting standards. The role bridges billing and finance by assisting with reconciliation, reporting, and the accuracy of accounts receivable, supporting the organization's mission of community service and financial stewardship.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certificate in medical billing or healthcare administration preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in medical billing, accounting, or healthcare office support (internship or practicum acceptable).
  • 3+ years of knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, or insurance claim processes preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and familiarity with billing software (training provided).
  • Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and commitment to the organization's mission of service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with preparing and submitting medical claims to insurance carriers, Medicaid, and Medicare under supervision.
  • Verify patient information and insurance coverage prior to billing.
  • Post payments, adjustments, and basic denials accurately to patient accounts.
  • Generate and review simple billing reports to identify outstanding claims or balances.
  • Support patient account inquiries and help facilitate payment plans in accordance with financial assistance policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA and nonprofit financial standards.
  • Assist senior billing staff and collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to ensure billing accuracy.
  • Participate in ongoing training to develop billing, collections, and compliance knowledge.
