Position Summary:

The CMM Technician operates and maintains coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to perform precise dimensional inspections of parts, assemblies, and tooling to ensure conformance with engineering drawings, specifications, and Timken quality standards. This role supports operations and continuous improvement by delivering reliable measurement data, maintaining inspection equipment, and collaborating with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Set up, program, and operate CMMs (e.g., bridge, gantry, or horizontal models) for routine and complex part inspections.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T symbols, and technical specifications to develop effective measurement plans.
  • Create and edit CMM inspection programs using software such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, or equivalent.
  • Perform first-article inspections, in-process checks, and final inspections; document results and prepare inspection reports.
  • Analyze measurement data, identify nonconformances, and communicate findings to production and engineering for corrective action.
  • Calibrate, verify, and perform routine maintenance on CMMs and associated gauges, coordinate with metrology lab or external service providers for scheduled calibration.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, traceability, and quality documentation in electronic systems (e.g., QMS, MES).
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) related to dimensional issues.
  • Train operators and technicians on basic measurement techniques and part-specific inspection requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to increase inspection efficiency and measurement reliability.
  • Adhere to all safety, environmental, and company policies and procedures.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of hands-on CMM programming and operation experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • At least 2+ years of experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment, particularly bearings, shafts, or high-precision components.
  • Proficiency with one or more CMM software packages (PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, Mitutoyo/MeaSoft, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, geometric tolerance interpretation, and blueprint reading.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to produce accurate, repeatable measurement data.
  • Basic PC skills and familiarity with common software (Microsoft Office and Excel)

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in metrology, manufacturing technology, or related field preferred.
  • Formal metrology certification (e.g., ASQ Certified Calibration Technician, ASQ-CST, or equivalent).
  • Experience with automated inspection, fixture design, and probe calibration techniques.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and measurement system analysis (MSA/Gage R&R).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience with corrective action processes.
