K-8 Visual & Performing Arts Principal

Northwestern has transformed into a K-8 visual and performing arts academy. Visual and performing arts are powerful tools to help students discover healthy expression, build self-worth, engage in learning, and discover their power to contribute to the world. At the transformed Northwestern, students will:

  • Choose from a variety of different music, literary and visual art, theater, and dance classes.
  • Participate in a rich arts educational experience that includes various performances, visual arts and other community involvement opportunities.
  • Benefit from major upgrades to the school itself, including a new Welcome Center, studio spaces for dance and art classes, brand new digital graphics and video production lab, and new kindergarten classrooms.

Position Summary:

The K-8 Visual & Performing Arts Principal provides effective instructional leadership for the staff of the school in developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive educational program and administers the program in accordance with School Board policies and administrative rules and regulations. The principal's primary function is to provide visionary leadership for the building and manage those activities which create a dynamic educational experience for students and a positive culture for students, staff and families.

  • Skilled at establishing clear systems, routines and procedures and is adept at communicating change to stakeholders, gaining buy-in and establishing collective high expectations.
  • Proven track record of significantly improving outcomes, specifically around student enrollment, attendance, achievement, engagement, staffing, and school-wide climate and culture.
  • Successful delivery of staff development resulting in the integration of new teaching strategies.
  • Knowledge of technology as an educational tool for data collection and analysis to drive instruction and improve student learning
  • Successful experience working with a culturally diverse community, staff and student population
  • Experience creating an equitable learning environment for all students
  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the practices of effective schools.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong planning, organizational, motivational, and evaluation skills.
  • Demonstrates integrity in meeting commitments with all stakeholders in a variety of settings.
  • Visionary, self-confident and thoughtful.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of the school's operation.
  • Serves as an instructional leader by coordinating the development of and monitoring the implementation of the school improvement plan in accordance with the district mission.
  • Conducts teacher evaluations and assists in developing instructional goals to increase student achievement and professional growth of all employees
  • Assigns teachers to direct the work of student teachers, interns and resident teachers to ensure that the teaching experience is a learning experience for students.
  • Exercises visible leadership in the school and community.  Advocates and serves as spokesperson for the school to all stakeholders.  Communicates with decision-makers outside the school community while maintaining ethical interactions with students, staff, parents and the community.
  • Works with appropriate central office administrative personnel regarding school needs, such as curriculum, personnel, financial and accounting functions, maintenance, security, food service and recreational programs in order to promote integrated operations within the organization.
  • Manages school-level budgeting process
  • Develops and implements a school wide plan to ensure the safety of students and staff in accordance with established District policies and procedures
  • Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on student progress and attendance for educational monitoring, district reporting and legal requirements.
  • Develops and coordinates a system for maintaining appropriate student conduct throughout a building to provide an orderly environment conducive to learning.
  • Interviews and selects qualified personnel to be recommended for appointment.
  • Oversees the administration of the testing program for the school.
  • Oversees and monitors the implementation and effective delivery of the district-adopted curriculum to the students enrolled in the school.
  • Implements and administers negotiated employee contracts at the school site.
  • Implements School Board policy, state statutes, and federal regulations as they pertain to the assigned school.
  • Access District and community resources to meet school needs.
  • Locates and applies for grants and seeks business partnerships to support school priorities.
  • Supervises and monitors the accurate and timely completion of data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Participates in District leadership meetings and other activities to enhance professional development.
  • Collaborates with school and District personnel to plan and implement District initiatives.
  • Exercises proactive leadership in promoting the vision and mission of the District.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in one or more of the following areas:  Curriculum, Instruction, Administration, Counseling, Elementary or Secondary Education.
  • Valid Michigan Administrator Certification.
  • Meeting requirements in Section 1246 of the Revised School Code concerning continued education and administrator certification.
  • 5 or more years of successful teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as Principal, Assistant Principal or Dean of Students at secondary school level
  • Experience in a K-8 and/or Visual & Performing Arts school
  • Understandings of PBS (Positive Behavior Support) and RTI (Response to Intervention) models.
  • Able to demonstrate a strong working knowledge of special education issues, IEP meetings, special education law, practices and procedures.

Contract: 261 Work Days

Salary: $109,374 - $130,011

Reports To:  Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
