Internship Battery information

What is an internship battery?

Internship Battery positions are internship roles specifically focused on the field of battery technology, which often involves research, development, testing, and manufacturing of batteries and energy storage systems. These internships provide students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in working with battery materials, cell design, performance analysis, and related laboratory or engineering tasks. Participants often collaborate with professionals in industries such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and consumer electronics, gaining practical skills and industry knowledge. These positions are ideal for those studying chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, or related disciplines.

What types of projects and learning experiences can I expect during a battery internship?

As a Battery Intern, you can expect to work on hands-on projects such as assisting with battery cell assembly, conducting performance tests, analyzing data, and supporting research on new battery chemistries. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers and scientists, gaining exposure to advanced laboratory equipment and industry-standard testing protocols. The role provides a valuable opportunity to develop both technical and problem-solving skills while contributing to real-world energy storage solutions. You’ll also participate in regular team meetings and may present your findings, helping you build communication and teamwork abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a battery intern, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Battery Intern, you generally need a background in chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and battery testing systems is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in research and team settings. These skills ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to battery development projects and adapt quickly to the technical challenges of the field.

About The Energy Authority

The Energy Authority is a public power-owned, nonprofit corporation with offices in Jacksonville, Florida, and Bellevue (Seattle), Washington. TEA provides public power utilities with access to advanced resources and technology systems so they can respond competitively in the changing energy markets. Through partnership with TEA, utilities benefit from an experienced organization that is singularly focused on deriving the maximum value of their assets from the market.

Join Our Team as a Power Modeling Engineer Intern!

Are you fascinated by how the electric grid works? Do you enjoy solving complex engineering problems, analyzing data, and building models that influence real-world decisions? If you're looking for an internship where you'll do more than observe—you'll contribute to meaningful work that impacts energy markets across the country—this opportunity is for you.

At The Energy Authority (TEA), our interns are treated as valued members of the team. As a Power Modeling Engineer Intern, you'll work alongside industry experts to develop and enhance power system models, analyze transmission networks, forecast energy prices, and explore the rapidly evolving energy landscape. From renewable generation and battery storage to transmission planning and market optimization, you'll gain hands-on experience solving the kinds of challenges that shape the future of the electric grid.

To maximize your learning and project ownership, interns must be available for a minimum commitment of two semesters (up to one year).

Why You'll Love This Role
  • Work on real projects that directly influence energy market forecasting and decision-making.
  • Gain hands-on experience with power system modeling, production cost models, and optimal power flow (OPF).
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and analysts who are passionate about mentoring the next generation of talent.
  • Develop highly sought-after technical skills in programming, analytics, and power system simulation.
  • Build solutions that improve forecasting accuracy and support strategic decisions for utilities across North America.
  • Be part of a collaborative team where curiosity, innovation, and continuous learning are encouraged every day.
What You'll DoBuild & Enhance Power Models
  • Assist in refining and maintaining network models across multiple energy markets.
  • Research and integrate datasets used in optimal power flow (OPF) and production cost modeling.
  • Develop and maintain a repository of transmission upgrades to improve network model accuracy.
  • Automate simulation schedules and workflows to evaluate system sensitivities more efficiently.
Analyze System Impacts
  • Evaluate how new generation, battery storage, transmission projects, and large electrical loads influence future energy prices.
  • Support the development of standardized reporting for impact studies and modeling results.
Collaborate & Communicate
  • Partner with engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to improve model quality and analytical processes.
  • Present findings and technical insights in a clear and meaningful way to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What You'll BringEducation
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power/Energy Systems) or Operations Research.
  • Candidates pursuing a Master's degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Coursework focused on power systems, optimal power flow, production cost modeling, or energy markets is preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Experience programming in at least one language such as Python or R.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Interest in power system modeling, optimization, or energy market analysis.
Bonus Points If You Have Experience With
  • PLEXOS
  • Dayzer
  • PSS®E
