Interns typically work on projects involving machine learning, data analysis, or AI-driven solutions using AWS platforms and tools. The internship provides exposure to real-world cloud computing environments, mentorship from experienced professionals, and opportunities to develop technical and professional skills. It's an excellent way for aspiring AI professionals to build their resumes and expand their knowledge of AWS technologies.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an AWS AI internship?

As an AWS AI intern, you'll typically collaborate on projects involving machine learning model development, data preprocessing, and deploying AI solutions on AWS platforms. You may work with teams to build prototypes, automate workflows, or contribute to research tasks that support new AI services. Interns often have opportunities to interact with product managers, engineers, and data scientists, gaining exposure to real-world applications and the end-to-end AI development lifecycle. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build practical skills and make a meaningful impact within your team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS AI intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS AI Intern, you need a solid grounding in computer science, programming (Python or Java), and foundational knowledge of machine learning concepts, often supported by relevant coursework or a degree in a related field. Familiarity with AWS services (like S3, EC2, SageMaker), machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), and cloud computing tools is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help interns stand out when collaborating on projects and presenting findings. These skills are crucial for contributing to real-world AI solutions, adapting quickly to new technologies, and maximizing learning during the internship.

Job description

Are you passionate about leveraging GenAI and advanced AWS technologies to simplify builder experience and accelerate innovations at AWS scale? We are building a new organization, AWS Builder Acceleration (AWSBA), focused on reducing toil and increasing building efficiency across AWS builders. Our mission is to accelerate AWS builder teams' innovation by eliminating friction throughout the software development and operational lifecycle. Through AI based automated solutions and centralized service management, we address fundamental challenges including Keep The Light On (KTLO) service maintenance burden, launch readiness complexities, and recurring operational load. Through continuous collaboration with builder teams to identify emerging challenges, we shape our strategic roadmap to reinvent the development and operational ecosystem.
We are seeking an SDE II to help AWSBA simplify and accelerate the software development experience for 20,000+ AWS engineers. You will shape AWS builder experience from the ground up with a singular mission: make software development, deployment and maintenance simpler across AWS. Success requires building services and tools that reduce friction, listening closely to what your internal customers tell you gets in the way of building, influencing the Amazon Software Builder Experience (ASBX) roadmap, and driving transformation for engineering teams. You will harness advanced technologies, including AI-powered tooling, agentic workflows, and innovative AWS solutions, to create next-generation software builder experience at AWS scale.
This role requires ownership, autonomy, and an ability to deliver results. You should be a self-starter with a bias towards independent problem solving. Clear communication and prioritization will be important as you partner with stakeholders to plan, design, and deliver game changing builder experiences to accelerate innovation. Your passion for improving builder experiences, and proven experience managing complex technology projects, will help you make strong strategic judgments. Your expertise is deep and broad. You start with the customers (builders) and work backwards to develop a coherent vision for services and tools that support the efficiency, flexibility and scale that builders expect from us. You have built and operated systems that support high-end business complexity and scale with simple and elegant solutions that are highly decoupled. You will join a select team of innovators creating the next generation of AWS builder experiences that will shape the company's future.
Key job responsibilities
- Identify and prioritize high-impact problems that impede AWS software development
- Decompose complex builder problems into simple, straightforward and scalable solutions.
- Collaborate with AWSBA, ASBX and AWS builder teams to build and operate the designed solutions.
- Deliver meaningful improvements weekly while working toward long-term transformation
Unique Opportunities
- Re-imagine how developers build and operate the software that underpins the world's largest cloud
- Drive significant transformation across AWS engineering
- Pioneer the use of cutting-edge generative AI technologies to create the next generation of builder experiences.
A day in the life
You should have deep expertise in the architecture and business use of AWS technologies. You recognize the transformative potential of generative AI in software development and are excited to pioneer AI-powered builder experiences that fundamentally change how developers write, debug, deploy and operate code at scale. You remain technically hands-on and close to the technology. You're passionate about developer experience and get frustrated by inefficiencies that make building software unnecessarily difficult. You understand the challenges AWS developers face today and collaborate with team members to simplify the AWS developer experience. You have experience contributing to complex software development initiatives. You'll strive for simplicity and will demonstrate significant creativity.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
- 2+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Deep hands-on experience building software at AWS
- Experience with software tooling and services supporting development lifecycle at scale
- Experience building large-scale AI solutions.
