Individuals are responsible to perform diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.

Education & Certification Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program for a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and graduate within 60 days of hire.

    OR

  • Completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program with Bachelor's degree.

    OR

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology WITH completed certificate for program (i.e. post-baccalaureate, hospital based internship, etc.) in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) that requires 90 semester credit hour plus internship.

    OR

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate's Degree or completed Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP, AMT or equivalent MLS eligibility.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Chemistry WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP categorical certification/eligibility as Technologist in one or more of the following: (BB), (C), (H), or (M).

    AND

  • All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Three 12 hours shifts/week (0800-2030), every 3rd weekend, one summer/one winter holiday

  • All individuals who are newly ASCP certified after January 1, 2004 or newly AMT certified after January 1, 2006 must maintain ongoing certification.

  • Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include US equivalent degree. We are not able to sponsor visas for laboratory medicine positions.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Individual may work in one or more laboratory disciplines and be supervised by the department manager, supervisor, senior technologist or delegated in-charge individual.

  • Employees must demonstrate competencies specific to populations served for clinical or non-clinical dependent upon laboratory location.

  • Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department.

  • Understand and participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing; pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical.

  • Anticipate and maintain required inventory (i.e. supplies, reagents, etc.) to ensure uninterrupted testing.

  • Ability to work under specific time constraints.

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing at all levels inside and outside the organization.

  • Reflects a positive attitude and abides by Bronson's Standards and Plan for Excellence.

  • Follows all laboratory established policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for instrument operation and preventative maintenance by performing on schedule. Troubleshoots equipment problems and takes action to resolve. Executes and evaluates quality control and quality assurance procedures. Documents and reports as required by regulatory agencies.

  • Performs, validates, interprets, documents and reports laboratory test results, determined by department assignment.

  • Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.

  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect results and seek to resolve appropriately.

  • Assists in training, orienting and touring new staff and students.

  • Participates in Laboratory Quality Program activities.

  • May be requested to alter start time, shift, department(s), and/or site depending on patient care needs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and if employee meets the qualifications for (for example: charge tech, competency evaluations, etc.).

  • Dependent on job duties, a valid Michigan driver's license and insurability through Bronson's carrier may be required

Working Conditions

  • May have direct patient contact when collecting a specimen and/or processing and evaluating specimens.

  • Work in an environment with some exposure to noxious fumes and unpleasant noises.

  • Work in an environment with risk of sustaining illness and injury from the use of chemicals and biological materials and organisms.

  • Working irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends and on-call hours.

  • Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to personal computer up to 90 percent of the time.

  • Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to45 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

  • Working conditions could include minor straining, fatiguing positions, physical motions, etc.

Point of Care Only - Two years MLS experience preferred

  • Performs training of non-lab testing personnel for point of care testing

  • Conducts competency assessment of non-lab testing personnel and documents according to regulatory requirements.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for all point of care instruments including operation and preventative maintenance.

  • Troubleshoots point of care equipment problems and takes action to resolve either remotely or in person.

  • Evaluates POC quality control results utilizing quality assurance procedures.

  • Prepares and processes external proficiency samples for non-lab testing personnel to testing in the same manner as patient samples.

  • Manages and supports hospital units with supply inventory to ensure uninterrupted testing.

  • Must be able to operate computer middleware program managing point of care analyzer interfaces, personnel management and test result management.
