The California Men's Colony (CMC) is an American male-only state prison located northwest of the city of San Luis Obispo County, along the central California coast approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The CMC has been called a 'country club' and 'garden spot' among California prisons because of its wide variety of vocational, educational, and psychological treatment programs. Recreational Therapist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
  • The Recreational Therapist develops and implements specialized recreational therapy programs aimed at enhancing social interaction, leisure time utilization, and reentry preparation for individuals in correctional or youth facilities.
  • Collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary treatment teams to ensure coordinated care for patients, working alongside primary clinicians, correctional counselors, and custody personnel.
  • Assess the recreational therapy needs of individuals, focusing on daily activities, communication skills, physical exercise, and coping mechanisms.
  • The Recreational Therapist formulates individualized treatment plans based on assessment outcomes and therapeutic objectives.
  • Organize and lead recreational activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, music, dance, and outdoor adventures.
  • Modify activities to suit patients with diverse abilities, disabilities, and cognitive levels.
  • Monitor and document patients' progress, behaviors, and responses to treatment interventions accurately.
  • Offer guidance, support, and motivation to encourage patients' active participation in therapeutic activities.
  • Educate patients and their families on the benefits of recreational therapy and provide guidance on continuing therapeutic activities beyond scheduled sessions.
  • The Recreational Therapist stays updated on current trends, research, and best practices in recreational therapy and related fields.

Recreational Therapist - REQUIREMENTS
  • Shall have a minimum of twelve (12) to thirty-six (36) months of therapist experience. Internship experience does not count.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Must be proficient in both oral and written English to effectively communicate.
  • Must have a full, unrestricted license to practice in the state of California.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are mandatory.
