Electrified Aircraft Propulsion Controls Engineer
Mechanical Engineer I

HX5 is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer/Thermal Analyst to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will support the development of fuel-to-electric conversion for aeropropulsion powertrains and their supporting technologies. Primary objectives are for development of a controller for a micro-turbojet engine and its testing, following NASA's established procedures and regulations, to ensure functionality, safety, and repeatability. The chosen candidate should be able to accomplish the following: analysis through modeling and simulation, perform testing to evaluate effectiveness, and diagnose and resolve technical issues. In addition, the knowledge gained will be used for redesigns to enhance performance and reliability.
Primarily, the selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Develop a controller for a micro-turbojet engine
  • Connect and test the actuators and controller of a micro-turbojet engine
  • Ensure the functionality, safety, and repeatability of the micro-turbojet engine actuators and controller
  • Assist in the build-up of a test cell control system for small-scale fuel-to-electric conversion research

This effort is monitored by the Intelligent Control and Autonomy Branch at NASA GRC, which conducts research and development of technologies to increase the level of intelligence and autonomy in complex aerospace space systems with a strong focus on aero-space propulsion systems.
Required Skills:
  • Proficient in Matlab and Simulink
  • Experience or familiarity with SOLIDWORKS
  • Experience or familiarity with Thermal Desktop
  • Experience or familiarity with gas turbine engine concepts
  • Experience or familiarity with electrified powertrain modeling, integration, and operation
  • Experience or familiarity with thermal management concepts for electrified aircraft.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Committed to successful collaboration with the NASA team and partners

Desired Skills:
  • Experience working with NASA on an electrified aero propulsion project
  • Experience with fuel-to-electric conversion for hybrid electric aircraft.
  • Experience or familiarity in requirements development for hardware development and testing

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and zero (0) to two (2) years of relevant experience

Other Position Requirements:
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation
