Job description

Job Description
The Mayo Clinic Digital Pathology (MCDP) is seeking an AI Research Fellow to help advance the next generation of pathology practice. We are seeking an exceptional researcher who blends technical excellence with scientific curiosity and a desire for real-world impact.
Mayo Clinic has digitized over 15 million gigapixel digital pathology slides, representing an incredible diversity of complex diseases of all types. This data is now helping to power fundamental advancements in digital pathology, including the training of class-leading pathology foundation models and task-specific models that span pathology practice. At Mayo Clinic, you will have access not only to pathology slide data, but the full spectrum of multimodal and longitudinal clinical data needed to develop personalized diagnostic or predictive AI tools. As a member of the MCDP team, you will contribute to foundational research in digital pathology and real-world translation. Your work will help to bring cutting edge innovations into clinical practice and building the foundations of the next wave of innovation in pathology.
We are seeking candidates that could be successful in many environments, including top-tier academic laboratories and leading technology companies, but who choose this work because of its potential for real and lasting impact on patients and the future of healthcare.
What You'll Do
  • Develop impactful software tools and AI: Develop, implement, and evaluate vision and multimodal transformers and task-specific models to support insight generation and downstream model development
  • Lead ambitious research: Design and execute novel research projects in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of AI scientists, data scientists and engineers and pathologists
  • Drive growth and visibility: Help shape the direction and culture of MCDP as a new and expanding team. You'll play a key role in our success through your code, publications, and strategic promotion of our work.

Qualifications
  • PhD in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Machine Learning, Engineering, Physics, Medical Physics, Applied Math, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in deep learning (e.g., CNNs, transformers) and familiarity with emerging techniques for reasoning and compositionality with large language models.
  • Strong Python and ML ecosystem skills (e.g., PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).
  • Facility with C/C++/Rust or other systems-level programming languages
  • Skilled in writing and able to communicate complex scientific ideas clearly and compellingly.
  • Self-motivated, execution-focused, and intellectually independent.
  • Goal-oriented.
  • Comfortable working with real-world, messy, heterogeneous healthcare data.
  • A team player who thrives as a member of a highly functional cross-disciplinary team

Preferred Elements
  • Prior experience with AI in healthcare settings.
  • Prior experience with digital pathology.
  • Strong software engineering practices (Git, CI).
