What is an internship acoustical engineer?

An Internship Acoustical Engineer is a student or recent graduate who works with professional acoustical engineers to gain practical experience in the field of acoustics. Their responsibilities typically include assisting with sound measurements, data analysis, acoustic modeling, and the design of noise control solutions. Interns work under supervision and help with real-world projects in areas such as building acoustics, environmental noise, or audio technology. This role helps them apply classroom knowledge, develop technical skills, and prepare for a career as a professional acoustical engineer.

What does an internship acoustical engineer do?

As an Internship Acoustical Engineer, you can anticipate assisting with sound measurements, data analysis, and acoustic modeling under the supervision of senior engineers. Your daily tasks may include conducting site surveys, preparing technical reports, and supporting the design of noise control solutions for buildings or environmental projects. Interns often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical engineers, and project managers, gaining firsthand experience in multidisciplinary teams. This role provides a valuable opportunity to develop technical skills while learning about real-world acoustical challenges and industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship acoustical engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Acoustical Engineer, you need a solid foundation in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, often supported by coursework or a degree in acoustics, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with acoustic modeling software (such as EASE or MATLAB), measurement equipment, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help interns contribute meaningfully to projects. These competencies ensure accurate analyses, innovative solutions, and successful collaboration in noise control, architectural acoustics, and related projects.

What is the difference between Internship Acoustical Engineer vs Acoustical Engineer?

AspectInternship Acoustical EngineerAcoustical Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant degreeBachelor's or Master's in acoustics or related field, professional experience preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, supervised, entry-level projectsFull-time professional environment, independent project work
Industry UsageUsed for training and skill development in acoustics firms or labsDesign, analysis, and testing of acoustical systems in various industries

Internship Acoustical Engineers are entry-level trainees gaining hands-on experience, while Acoustical Engineers are fully qualified professionals managing projects independently. The internship provides foundational skills, whereas the full engineer role involves applying expertise to complex acoustical challenges.

Are internship acoustical engineers in demand?

Internship acoustical engineers are in demand as the field grows with increased focus on noise control, environmental acoustics, and sound design. Employers seek candidates with strong technical skills, knowledge of acoustical measurement tools, and relevant certifications, making internships valuable for gaining practical experience and improving job prospects.

Do acoustical engineers make good money?

Acoustical engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, but experienced professionals with specialized skills in sound analysis and design can earn higher wages, often supplemented by certifications and advanced degrees.

How to become an internship acoustical engineer?

To become an internship acoustical engineer, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in acoustical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Gaining experience with acoustical analysis tools, such as MATLAB or CAD software, and developing strong problem-solving skills are also important. Internships are often available to students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field.

Job description

The future of aerospace and defense starts here.

Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.

We are seeking a Lead Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design, implementation, and maintenance of custom automated fluid test systems for Ursa Major's propulsion manufacturing facilities. You will be highly collaborative with Technicians and Operators, Manufacturing, Quality, Safety, Controls, and Design Engineers.

This role will focus on developing fluid systems that enable safe, robust, and efficient propulsion manufacturing with a focus on operator usability. You will lead fluid system design including P&ID, flow calculations, packaging, and tube routing in CAD. The scope of designs will vary from ultra-low flow bench-top to more than 1000GPM functional qualification of propulsion elements. You will be responsible for designs that use vacuum and high-pressure fluids such as nitrogen, water, kerosene, cryogenics, and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical design with a focus on fluid systems and instrumentation layout, plus structural framing and interface panel design
  • Collect requirements from test engineers and product designers
  • Draft system P&ID in collaboration with I&C engineers
  • Perform system analysis including flow, pressure, safety factor and expected life using hand calculations and FEA where required
  • Host design review sessions with Technicians, Operators, and Engineering to generate buy-in and ensure designs meet their needs
  • Provide support to build operations by designing fixtures in CAD and commissioning them on the production floor
  • Be hands-on during the build process, working alongside engineers, technicians, and operators
  • Have a safety-first mindset when working around and designing hardware for fluids including kerosene, water, peroxide, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen with pressures up to 15,000 psi, as well as cryogenics
  • Generate documentation including drawings, assembly and work instructions for operation and maintenance

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience with test system design or related role
  • BS degree or higher in an engineering field, Mechanical, Chemical, or Mechatronic preferred (suitable experience may be substituted)
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting automated hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Expertise in CAD (SolidWorks or other) and GD&T
  • Familiarity with NFPA, NEC, ASME piping codes, and other related standards
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with other functions and departments
  • Demonstrated ability to balance requirements of multiple stakeholders and deliver projects on time
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for long periods, working on ladders, kneeling, crouching, working in tight spaces, lifting objects up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Experience:

  • Working knowledge and skilled with hand tools and able to fabricate and assemble to drawing specifications
