What is an internship in accounting automation?

An Internship in Accounting Automation is a temporary position where students or recent graduates learn to use technology and software to streamline accounting tasks, such as data entry, reconciliation, and reporting. Interns gain hands-on experience with tools like Excel, QuickBooks, or specialized automation platforms. This role often includes supporting the automation of financial processes, helping to increase efficiency and accuracy in the accounting department. The internship provides practical skills that are highly valued in modern accounting careers.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an accounting automation internship?

As an Accounting Automation intern, you’ll typically support the finance team in streamlining and digitizing accounting processes. This can include assisting with the implementation of automation tools, helping migrate data to new accounting systems, and developing or testing workflows that reduce manual entry. You may also analyze current processes to identify inefficiencies and propose technology-driven improvements. Expect to collaborate closely with both accounting and IT professionals, gaining hands-on experience with real-world accounting software and automation platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in accounting automation?

To thrive in an Internship Accounting Automation role, you need a foundation in accounting principles, analytical thinking, and a relevant academic background in accounting, finance, or business. Familiarity with automation tools like Excel macros, ERP systems (such as SAP or Oracle), and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) platforms is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help interns collaborate effectively and adapt to evolving processes. These skills are crucial for streamlining accounting tasks, ensuring data accuracy, and supporting digital transformation initiatives in finance.

About MEC

At MEC General Contractors, we're proud to be a third-generation, family-owned company with a legacy built on trust, innovation, and dedication for over 50 years. With offices in Melbourne and Orlando, Florida, and Dallas, Texas, we're strategically growing while staying true to our roots. Our core values-Family, Engineering Minded, and Passion-guide everything we do, from the way we build projects to how we treat our team. At MEC, we believe in empowering our employees, fostering a culture where your voice matters, your ideas are valued, and your growth is supported. Join us as we continue to shape communities and build a future we can all be proud of.

We're also investing heavily in modernizing how our Finance team works, building out AI-powered tools and automated reporting that give us real-time visibility into our projects. You won't be stepping into a department stuck doing things the old way; you'll see firsthand how a forward-thinking finance team uses technology to work smarter.

The Role

We're looking for a motivated accounting student to join our Finance & Accounting team as an intern. You'll get hands-on exposure to construction-industry accounting, a specialized niche within GAAP that most students never see in the classroom, while working alongside CPAs and finance leaders on live, real-world work.

This isn't a "make copies and get coffee" internship. You'll be doing real analysis with real data, with direct mentorship from our VP of Finance and accounting team.

What You'll Work On
  • Assist with monthly financial close processes, including account reconciliations and journal entry support
  • Support Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedule preparation and analysis under the percentage-of-completion method
  • Help track and reconcile subcontractor change orders and owner change orders (COs) across active projects
  • Assist with accounts payable review, vendor documentation, and expense coding accuracy
  • Support ad hoc financial reporting and data analysis using Sage Intacct and Procore
  • Learn how construction financial data flows from the field (Procore) into the general ledger (Sage Intacct) and payroll/HR system (UKG)
  • Participate in special projects, including process improvement and reporting automation initiatives
What We're Looking For
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Sophomore standing or above preferred)
  • Strong Excel skills; comfort working with data and numbers in detail
  • Interest in construction, real estate, or project-based accounting a plus, but not required
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn
  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to ask questions
  • Ability to work on-site in Melbourne, FL
Why MEC
  • Direct mentorship from experienced CPAs and finance leaders, not just busywork
  • Exposure to construction accounting, a specialized and in-demand skill set
  • Real experience with enterprise systems (Sage Intacct, Procore, UKG) that translates directly to a resume
  • Potential path to a full-time offer upon graduation for strong performers
  • Front-row seat to how a $250M+ contractor runs its finance function
  • Exposure to a finance team actively modernizing with AI and automation, not a department stuck in spreadsheets and paper
