Internal Tools Engineer information

What does an internal tools engineer do?

An Internal Tools Engineer designs, builds, and maintains software tools and systems that help other employees within a company work more efficiently. These tools can range from automation scripts and dashboards to complex internal applications used across departments. The primary goal is to streamline workflows, reduce repetitive tasks, and improve productivity for teams like engineering, operations, support, and more. Internal Tools Engineers collaborate closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and create technical solutions that solve real business problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internal tools engineer?

To thrive as an Internal Tools Engineer, you need strong programming skills (commonly in Python, JavaScript, or Java), experience with software development lifecycle, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with internal platforms, automation tools, version control systems like Git, and CI/CD pipelines is often required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you understand user needs and work effectively across teams. These competencies are crucial for developing efficient, user-friendly internal solutions that boost organizational productivity and streamline workflows.

How does an internal tools engineer typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Internal Tools Engineers frequently work closely with teams such as product management, customer support, operations, and engineering to identify pain points and streamline workflows. They gather requirements through regular meetings, prioritize feature requests, and provide technical support for the tools they build and maintain. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for ensuring that internal solutions are both effective and user-friendly, allowing departments to operate more efficiently and focus on their core objectives.

Job description

We are looking for an AI Solutions Engineer to join our Technical & Data Intelligence team. This role is designed for a hands-on problem solver who can combine AI, software engineering, data, and business understanding to build practical solutions that improve operational efficiency and decision-making across the organization. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in ambiguous business environments, partnering with cross-functional teams, identifying opportunities for improvement, and delivering scalable technical solutions from concept to implementation. We value candidates who can go beyond building demos. The right person is able to understand a real business problem, design a practical solution, build it, deploy it, support adoption, and continuously improve it based on user feedback and measurable impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement AI-enabled solutions that address real business and operational challenges.
  • Work closely with business and technical stakeholders to understand requirements, clarify problems, and translate needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Build and integrate AI applications, automation workflows, internal tools, and data-driven solutions into existing business processes.
  • Apply technologies such as LLMs, RAG, agents, prompt engineering, APIs, and data pipelines where appropriate to improve productivity and decision-making.
  • Support the full solution lifecycle, including discovery, prototyping, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and ongoing improvement.
  • Evaluate solution performance, reliability, usability, cost, and business impact, and continuously improve delivered solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, data, product, operations, and business teams to ensure solutions are adopted and maintained effectively.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, data engineering, automation, AI application development, or related technical roles.
  • Strong programming ability in Python and experience working with APIs, databases, SQL, and data processing workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with AI application development, including LLM APIs, RAG, agents, prompt engineering, or related technologies.
  • Ability to understand business processes, analyze ambiguous problems, and convert them into actionable technical solutions.
  • Experience delivering technical solutions beyond prototypes, preferably in production or business-critical environments.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership, execution ability, and willingness to work in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience in solutions engineering, forward deployed engineering, internal tools, automation, technical consulting, or business systems implementation.
  • Experience with enterprise systems, workflow automation, BI tools, cloud platforms, or data platforms.
  • Experience building AI assistants, automation tools, knowledge systems, decision-support tools, or internal productivity applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, system integration, security, permissions, monitoring, and production reliability practices.
