Job description

Job Title: GIS Special Projects Intern
Department: Technology Services    
Rate: $17.50
Pay Grade: 1
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Hybrid: Yes

The GIS Special Projects Intern will provide support to the GIS team leads with a focus on tasks to update the attribution and mapping accuracy of critical GIS layers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Follow defined processes to update attributes of GIS features based on historical record documents.
• Update mapped locations of GIS features based on associated record documents and GPS coordinates.
• Assist with preparing and updating customized maps (derived from GIS data and other data sources).
• Assist members of the Pittsburgh Water team in completing field surveys of critical assets using high-accuracy GPS units.
• Provide updates at departmental and team meetings to communicate the status of assigned project work.
• Other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Familiarity with ESRI Software that is utilized for mapping and attribute updates.
• Administrative skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Ability to establish and maintain accurate records and prepare reports/correspondence.
• Effective organizational and interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication skills. 
• Knowledge of general office procedures, practices, and equipment.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.

• Enrollment in an Undergraduate or Graduate Degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Technology, Cartography, or a related field.
• Basic knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS tools strongly preferred.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) PA Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment. A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment. 

Applicant must have permanent residency within one of the following Pennsylvania counties at the time of appointment and remain a resident within one of the noted counties throughout employment with the Pittsburgh Water: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Indiana, Washington, or Westmoreland.  

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / RECEIVED
No direct reports / Will receive supervision directly from the GIS Manager and/or Senior GIS Analysts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.

CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a moderate or quiet noise level in the office work environment. Subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours or during emergency situations or other extensive periods.

The position may also include occasional field work in urban and rugged environments and various weather conditions.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) physical examination performed by the Authority's examining physician.

DRUG TESTING
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) drug screening. Continued employment may be subject to randomized drug and alcohol testing conducted without advance notice and for reasonable suspicion.

Ability to successfully pass a thorough investigation consisting of a criminal history check, verification of prior employment and performance, reference, and credentials checks, and in some cases credit history.
