Idaho National Laboratory (INL) hosts over 300 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INL's mission.ย ย Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in various operations and business disciplines.

The Deliverables:

Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship.ย ย For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and guidance to the intern.ย ย In addition to regular activities, interns are invited to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events designed with career development in mind.ย ย Completion of a final project is highly recommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditional poster, electronic presentation or video.

The Process:

Through this single application, you are considered for all internship projects related to INL Engineering Services. Simply complete the application questions which will help us identify what knowledge and experience you already have that may be related to the preferred qualifications for each individual internship project. It is common for applicants to receive consideration for multiple projects at varying times throughout the process. Mentors will make direct contact with applicants who meet their project qualifications to share the specific details of the project. On average, INL plans for approximately 300 internships each year.ย ย Most internships provide flexibility with start and end dates to account for varying university term schedules.ย ย We encourage early applications to increase the number of opportunities available to you.

The Projects:

In addition to research engineering opportunities, INL offersย applied engineering opportunities to ensure that facilities are properly maintained, that changes and upgrades are engineered to meet research and experimental requirements and for overall operations support ofย INLย These opportunities areย available at our main campuses located in Idaho Falls,ย Materials and Fuels Complex andย the Advanced Test Reactor Complex.ย ย Some projects interns have participated in recently include:

--Working with Power Management to develop a comprehensive list of substation and distribution gear, gather pertinent vendor data for them, and establish a Power Management technical reference library. The intern may also have the opportunity to assist with the as-built drawing redline markups for new and/or modified Power Maintenance systems.

--Work on an REC Master Equipment List and PM optimization program which is set up to ensure that REC research facilities are mission ready at all times.

Working in the FSS Engineering Organization performing a variety of duties, which will include working on the equipment Preventative Maintenance Program, preparing Preventative Maintenance justification documents and performing equipment verifications.

--Student will support various system engineers at the Advanced Test Reactor Complex in performing various system engineer duties. Interns will spend time in the field collecting component data and in an office environment supporting system engineering core business process such as data analysis for predicting equipment health. Intern will gain engineering field experience with; drawings, systems and components of reactor and nonreactor facilities, and an understanding of working in a radiological environment.

--The INL is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student studying structural, architectural, or civil engineering. Completion of classes in concrete and steel design is desired. The student will develop construction drawings and specifications, apply normal, natural phenomena hazard loads, and evaluate for adequacy. The student would support formal report preparation.

--The INL is seeking an undergraduate student studying mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Completion of basic entry level engineering courses and good computer skills using MS Excel and Word are required. The student will assist with the development of configuration management information for the further development of the Asset Suite database. Tasks will also include assistance with the closeout of Engineering Job files. Students will work closely with mentoring engineers on system engineering projects and facility design issues.

--The Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) located at MFC is seeking an undergraduate engineering student for summer internship to work closely with Process Engineers in the development of new hot cell equipment, remote operations and design of new equipment, developing qualification plans to enable testing of equipment in mockup, and assistance in post irradiation examination data analysis. Education Objective: Develop an understanding of the engineering required to enable "off the shelf" items to be used in a remote, hot cell environment. Develop the skills to write clear instructions that can be followed to use remotely operated equipment. Enhance the student's understanding of criticality safety and how it applies in a real world and daily scenarios in the operation of a hot cell for post irradiation examinations. Enable the student to experience the process of Post Irradiation Examinations from cask receipt and unloading, nondestructive examinations in a hot cell, and destructive examinations. Encourage and enhance the student's raw data acquisition skills and data analysis for presentation to program sponsors.

--The INL is seeking a student studying mechanical or civil engineering or a closely related field. Completion of classes in concrete and steel design, finite element modeling, or machine design is desired. The student will be responsible for establishing anchor bolt design and seismic acceleration determination templates using ACI 318/349 and ASCE 710, respectively. In addition, the student may develop finite element models of structures, systems and components, apply normal, natural hazard, thermal and pressure loads, and evaluate for adequacy.

The student would support formal report preparation and administrative work tasks. Education Objective: Ability to understand/interpret design Codes. Expand his/her knowledge of engineering resources. Ability to create a finite element model (including both validating and verification tasks).

Required Qualifications:
All Internship Candidates Must:
  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Complete this application, which is used to place students based on their academic interests, coursework, knowledge and communication skills
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university (undergraduate, graduate, PhD).
