What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern Software Development Engineer In Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, basic software testing concepts, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), version control systems like Git, and bug tracking platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help distinguish top candidates. These skills ensure the ability to efficiently identify, document, and communicate software defects while contributing to high-quality product releases.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an Intern Software Development Engineer In Test expect during their internship?

As an Intern Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET), you can expect to work on tasks such as writing and maintaining automated test scripts, executing manual and automated tests, and reporting bugs to the development team. Interns often get exposure to various testing frameworks, participate in code reviews, and collaborate closely with both software developers and QA engineers. You'll likely be involved in sprint meetings and may contribute to the design of test cases for new product features. This collaborative environment offers hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the software development lifecycle.

What are Intern Software Development Engineers In Test?

Intern Software Development Engineers In Test (SDETs) are entry-level professionals who assist in designing, developing, and executing automated tests to ensure the quality of software products. They work closely with development and QA teams to write test cases, identify bugs, and verify that applications meet specified requirements. These interns often gain hands-on experience with testing frameworks, programming languages, and tools used in software quality assurance. The role helps them build foundational skills in both software development and testing methodologies.

Staff Test Engineer (EE/ME/SWE)

Allocor Tech

Waynesboro, VA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Job description

Salary:

Why This Role Exists

Allocortechs current test infrastructure is reactive, artisanal, and not designed to scale. Test setups are ad hoc, test data is inconsistently captured, and there is no unified strategy connecting R&D validation, production EOL testing, and qualification testing. As production rates increase and the product portfolio expands, this approach creates quality risk, slows design iteration, and prevents automated regression. This role moves the company from sloppy setups to an architected, scalable test strategy.

Role Summary

The Staff Test Engineer architects and implements the company-wide test strategy for Allocortechs avionics products. You will design HIL/SIL frameworks, production end-of-line testers, and automated validation pipelines that support both R&D design cycles and high-rate production. This is a high-autonomy, cross-disciplinary role spanning electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, with direct impact on product quality, engineering velocity, and production scalability.

Core Responsibilities

  • Architect the company-wide test strategy, spanning R&D validation (HIL/SIL), production end-of-line (EOL) testing, and qualification testing for the full product portfolio.
  • Design and oversee the build of complex test rigs for the 800V inverter and high-voltage battery systems, including safety interlocks and automated sequencing.
  • Standardize test equipment selection, data acquisition frameworks, and reporting artifacts across all engineering programs.
  • Implement automated data analysis pipelines to accelerate design cycles, reduce manual data processing, and enable trend analysis across production lots.
  • Define the test roadmap aligned with the 3-year production forecast, including capital equipment planning and lab facility requirements.
  • Develop and maintain a test case library with full traceability to requirements (verification matrix).
  • Collaborate with quality engineering to integrate test data into CAPA processes and first-article inspection workflows.
  • Mentor engineers across disciplines on test design, instrumentation best practices, and statistical analysis of test data.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in test engineering, validation engineering, or a combined hardware/software test role within electronics, aerospace, or automotive.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting HIL or SIL test frameworks for power electronics, motor controllers, or embedded systems.
  • Proficiency in test automation (LabVIEW, Python, NI TestStand, or equivalent) and data acquisition hardware (NI, Keysight, or equivalent).
  • Experience designing production EOL testers with automated pass/fail sequencing.
  • Strong cross-disciplinary skills spanning electrical, mechanical, and software engineering as applied to test system design.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of test data (Cpk, GR&R, regression) and root cause investigation support.
  • BSEE, BSME, BSCS, or equivalent; advanced degree preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace or defense test environments with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, or MIL-STD-461 qualification testing.
  • Background in high-voltage test safety design, including arc flash risk mitigation and interlock systems.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 requirements for monitoring, measurement, and test equipment (Clause 7.1.5).
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for test software and automated regression suites.
