Job description

Submit a resume and portfolio showcasing your social media skills. Examples of your previous work to consider including are: photos, videos, reels, graphics, social media posts, etc. It is particularly helpful to include examples of video editing ability.
This internship requires a commitment of at least the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 semesters, but it can be extended into additional semesters upon mutual agreement of the intern and supervisor.
This is a paid internship and is not eligible for course credit.

Responsibilities*
The Social Media and Communications Intern works closely with the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Communications team, providing support for social media content creation, photography, videography and other communications duties. Primarily, the intern will shoot and edit Reels and other short videos for UM-Dearborn social media (TikTok and Instagram), with a focus on telling interesting student stories. Other duties may include:
  • Taking photographs for social media and other needs
  • Working with our Digital Marketing Manager to produce graphics (using Canva) and written content for UM-Dearborn's social media channels: Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok
  • Helping to organize student social media takeovers
  • Selecting and resizing photos for Reporter (faculty/staff eNews), social media and other needs
  • Assisting staff photographer with photo shoots, including providing scheduling assistance
  • Pulling and analyzing social media metrics

Required Qualifications*
  • Candidates must be a current UM-Dearborn student
  • Communication, English, Journalism or Marketing majors are likely to be a good fit for this role, but students in other majors with relevant experience are encouraged to apply
  • Must be willing to appear in photos/video on UM-Dearborn's social media
  • Basic photography and social media experience is necessary. Experience with Canva and video/video editing is a plus, but a willingness to learn is also great.
  • Reliable, good communicator, well organized and able to work independently
  • An overall passion for UM-Dearborn and a tie to the pulse of student life on campus

This internship will provide real-world experience learning how to create content, develop a strategy and track metrics across a large social media following, encompassing over 139K followers on 5 platforms. Interns will develop a better understanding of social media management and an updated portfolio of social media projects, as well as experience with various other tasks involved in creating and maintaining engaging, results-driven digital communications. Creating short-form video for TikTok and Instagram will be the primary focus of this internship.
