Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist the Level I Pharmacy Technician accurately prepares and labels medications, fills automated dispensing devices, squad boxes, code trays and replaces floorstock. The Level I Pharmacy Technicians fills and exchanges patient-specific medication supplies, monitoring for returned and discontinued medications, as well as restocking storage bins and facilitating requests for re-ordering drugs and supplies. The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe and clean work environment and communicating in support of Valley Health values.

Responsibilities and Duties

Delivers appropriate quantities to Pyxis stations and ancillary departments. Charges for controlled substances using daily accountability records. Delivers all meds in a timely fashion. Reviews and resolves all Pyxis discrepancies. Reports all unresolved discrepancies to supervisor.

Continuously determines if medication discrepancies have occurred by inspecting the MAR form, reviewing the patient chart or consulting with the appropriate nurse. Completes cart exchange & flow-sheets in a timely manner. Processes Flow-sheet changes in computer system and has entries verified by a pharmacist as soon as possible. Credits all IV's as indicated while doing Flow-sheets.

Continuously communicates workload status to fellow team members. Keeps the pharmacist-on-duty informed on all workload issues as well as customer concerns. Coordinates with pharmacist-on-duty all work and meal breaks. Effectively communicates workload status between shifts.

Accurately replace and charge for all emergency medications. Check for expiration dates and log and secure appropriately. Fulfill floorstock requests as needed.

Restocks storage bins daily. Requests reorder of drugs and supplies daily when levels reach minimum assigned amounts.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the department and all work areas. Assists in the proper maintenance of all equipment, furniture and fixtures within the organization.


Continually selects and appropriately labels ordered medications for check by a pharmacist. Prepares oral adult, NICU and pediatric preparations into unit dose packaging as needed to fulfill patient orders and avoid stock-outs. Documents all compounding and prepacking activities as required prior to check by a pharmacist. Answers all telephone calls within specified time period, using appropriate customer service skills. Triages calls for technician or pharmacist intervention and follows through in an appropriate manner. Assigns appropriate priorities to med orders as they are received. Verifies correct supply of medications delivered to the patients' respective floor daily. Screens for discontinued medications, bulks requiring transfer or doses still to be administered that should remain on the unit. Sends tubes to patient floors and pulls tubes when necessary to keep station clear and fulfill designated turnaround times for STAT and routine orders. Manages cartfill, completing process within designated times and facilitates pharmacist QA checks.

Valid Virginia Pharmacy Technician Certification or obtain within 9 months of hire required or valid Virginia Pharmacy Intern Certification required
Qualifications
Must meet complete competencies and be eligible for training for Level II Technician within 2080 hours of employment at Valley Health.
