JOB DESCRIPTION
**Job Title: Pharmacy Intern Job Code: 550098**
Immediate Supervisor: Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacy Operations Supervisor Status: Non-Exempt
**DEPARTMENT FUNCTION/JOB OVERVIEW**
The Pharmacy Intern is in training to provide dispensing, distributive, educational and clinical services. The pharmacy intern will comply with all legal and practice standards. This is a training position for a pharmacy school student in good standing at an accredited College of Pharmacy. All areas of training are subject to authentication by a licensed pharmacist and include: 1) review and interpret physician orders; 2) accurately and efficiently dispense and distribute medications; 3) provide accurate and timely drug information; 4) provide all aspects of clinical pharmacy. Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
1. Incorporate the hospital mission into all tasks. 2. Provide accurate and useful drug therapy information for physicians and nurses. 3. Participate in the distributive phase of pharmacy operations. 4. Interpret physician orders accurately and assess for safety and appropriateness subject to review by licensed pharmacist. 5. Enter and/or verify patient medication orders accurately into the computer system to be authenticated by licensed pharmacist. 6. Review patient profiles for diagnosis/allergies/ duplications/interactions. 7. Dispense or check oral medications intended for inpatient consumption in a timely manner. 1. This includes medication dispensed through Automated Dispensing Machines. 8. Prepare or check intravenous medications intended for inpatient administration subject to review of licensed pharmacist. 9. Responsibility for Confidential Material and Information. 10. Must maintain and respect patient and family privacy and confidentiality at all times. 11. Prepare and dispense parenteral nutrition fluids subject to review by licensed pharmacist. 12. Compound medications or treatments that are not commercially available. 13. Maintain and evaluate proper inventory levels/purchasing. 14. Maintain quality improvement program. 15. Maintain/monitor narcotics and narcotic records including those with the Automated Dispensing Machines. 16. Coordinate and review technician activity. 17. Complete tasks described above while maintaining acceptable productivity. 18. Monitor inpatient drug regimens and participate in the intervention process to improve patient outcomes and promote rational use of medications subject to review by licensed pharmacist. 19. Analyze patient charts and suggest drug therapy modifications based on the medical information and patient history contained in the chart. 20. Alert a patient's attending physician to potential problems caused by drug: drug interactions, compromised renal or hepatic function and other pre-existing conditions that may impact drug absorption, distribution, metabolism or excretion. 21. Comply with all local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws relating to the practice of pharmacy as well as the requirements of accrediting bodies. 22. Demonstrate clinical proficiency in all areas. 23. Run billing functions and computer functions as required. 24. Comply with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. 25. Provide patient and hospital staff education services as supervised by licensed pharmacist. 26. Participate in patient education such as diabetes education, drug information/counseling, cardiac and stroke rehabilitation classes.
**PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS**
Lifting 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing and walking.
Works in a climate-controlled environment. Hazards include potential for exposure to hazardous (cytotoxic, chemotherapy) materials which are stored and prepared in the department.
Critical Demands: High volume of work, pressure to provide emergency medications, constant interruptions, weekend/holiday/evening/on-call shifts may be required.
Must have excellent learning abilities, verbal skills, manual dexterity and color discrimination. Requires sufficient sight to see and read reports and computer screen. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person.
**QUALIFICATIONS** (Education/Training and/or Experience)
1. 1. Current enrollment in an ACPE (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) accredited School of Pharmacy in a Doctor of Pharmacy Program or equivalent. Hospital experience is preferred. 2. Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Intern or eligible for immediate registration prior to start date. 3. Sound professional judgment is required for skills that are technically sophisticated and intellectually challenging. Must be tactful and courteous in all professional and personal dealings, and respect patient and family privacy and confidentiality at all times. 4. Accuracy and Effect of Errors: Serious error may have a profound effect on patient welfare and outcome.
