Intern Linux Kernel Development information

What are some common challenges faced by interns in Linux Kernel Development roles?

Interns in Linux Kernel Development often encounter challenges such as understanding the vast and complex codebase, adhering to strict coding and documentation standards, and navigating the kernel community’s review processes. It's common to spend significant time learning about kernel subsystems and debugging intricate issues. Collaborating with experienced developers and actively engaging in mailing lists can help interns overcome these hurdles and grow their technical and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern in Linux Kernel Development, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern in Linux Kernel Development, you need a solid understanding of C programming, operating system concepts, and familiarity with Linux environments, often supported by coursework or relevant projects. Experience with version control systems like Git and tools such as GDB for debugging, as well as basic knowledge of kernel build systems, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and proactive communication help interns stand out in collaborative and technically complex settings. These skills and qualities are essential for effectively contributing to kernel codebases, troubleshooting issues, and learning from experienced developers in a challenging open-source environment.

What does an Intern Linux Kernel Development do?

An Intern in Linux Kernel Development assists in developing, testing, and debugging components of the Linux kernel. Their responsibilities typically include writing kernel code, fixing bugs, submitting patches, and collaborating with senior developers. Interns may also work on documentation and learn about the kernel development workflow, tools, and community practices. This role provides hands-on experience with low-level programming and open-source software development.

Job description

Senior Linux Kernel Software Engineer

Build Security Where It Matters Most

Join an elite engineering team developing next-generation cybersecurity technology that protects enterprise infrastructure from the inside out. We build security at the Linux kernel level, creating advanced defensive capabilities that stop sophisticated threats before they reach user space.

If you enjoy solving complex operating system challenges, optimizing kernel performance, and developing technology that has a direct impact on enterprise security, we'd like to talk with you.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop Linux kernel modules and low-level security components.

  • Build kernel-based monitoring, policy enforcement, and system protection capabilities.

  • Work with Linux internals including memory management, process scheduling, networking, filesystems, and device drivers.

  • Collaborate with security researchers and software engineers to integrate kernel technology into enterprise security products.

  • Analyze kernel crashes, optimize performance, and troubleshoot complex system-level issues.

  • Research emerging attack techniques and develop resilient kernel-level defenses.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional Linux kernel development experience.

  • Expert knowledge of Linux kernel internals, kernel modules, device drivers, and system architecture.

  • Advanced C/C++ programming skills.

  • Experience debugging kernel code using GDB, KGDB, crash, ftrace, perf, or similar tools.

  • Experience developing secure, reliable, high-performance kernel software.

  • Background in cybersecurity, endpoint security, EDR, malware detection, or operating system security.

Preferred Experience

  • Linux Security Modules (LSM)

  • eBPF

  • Kernel networking or filesystem development

  • Secure Boot, SELinux, AppArmor, or kernel hardening

  • Reverse engineering or vulnerability research

  • Kernel exploit mitigation techniques

  • Open-source Linux kernel contributions

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Develop technology that operates at the deepest level of the Linux operating system.

  • Solve challenging kernel engineering problems that few developers ever encounter.

  • Work alongside experienced security researchers and operating system experts.

  • Make a direct impact on products protecting critical enterprise infrastructure worldwide.

  • Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and significant opportunities for technical growth.

If you're passionate about Linux internals, kernel development, and building world-class cybersecurity technology, we'd love to hear from you.
