What is an intern lab?

Intern Lab positions are entry-level roles typically offered to students or recent graduates in laboratory settings. These internships provide hands-on experience in conducting experiments, managing lab equipment, and assisting with research projects under the supervision of experienced scientists or technicians. The goal is to help interns develop practical skills, gain exposure to laboratory protocols, and understand the day-to-day operations of a lab environment. Intern Lab roles can be found in a variety of fields, including biology, chemistry, medical research, and engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can an intern lab expect to work on during their internship?

As an Intern Lab, you can expect to engage in a variety of hands-on projects, such as assisting with experiments, collecting and analyzing data, preparing laboratory materials, and supporting routine maintenance of equipment. You'll likely collaborate closely with supervisors, researchers, and other interns, giving you exposure to different aspects of laboratory work. This experience not only helps you develop technical skills but also provides insight into the day-to-day operations and teamwork essential in a professional lab environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern lab, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Lab, you generally need a foundational understanding of scientific principles, laboratory safety, and basic research techniques, often supported by coursework in biology, chemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software (such as Excel or specialized lab databases), and adherence to standard operating procedures is important. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns excel in collaborative and dynamic lab environments. These skills ensure accurate data collection, safe operations, and meaningful contributions to ongoing research projects.

Overview
Hussmann's Internship Program provides meaningful, real-life experiences while working as a solutions leader for the food retailing industry. Hussmann interns receive competitive compensation, participate in community stewardship, network with company leadership, and learn about career opportunities available at Hussmann.
As a Test Engineering Intern in the 2027 Hussmann Summer Internship Program, you will gain experience and insight into a day in the life of an engineering lab professional. You will assist Engineering Lab Technicians and the Evaluation Engineering Team on performance and compliance testing projects.
Responsibilities

  • Evaluate test results and ensure that the result aligns with test requirements listed on the test request.
  • Assist in writing testing procedures and guidelines per UL Standards or as directed by evaluation engineer or test lab manager.
  • Set up, monitor, and report results of assigned laboratory tests, and follow up to closure of design changes on tested equipment.
  • Evaluate test results and make necessary changes, if any, in testing programs or modifications of equipment under test to continue on with test objectives.
  • Prepare, distribute, and file test reports as necessary detailing the objectives and conclusions of the testing project.
  • Assist in the development of new refrigerated products.
  • Network with senior leaders, associates, and other program interns to learn about our organization.
  • Tour Hussmann's 1.6 million square foot manufacturing facility, our Global Hub for hosting customers, and the R&D Lab where we test product quality.
  • Participate in community stewardship outreach, career development events, and other team-building offsite events.
  • Compete in the annual Ideation & Innovation Challenge.

Ideation & Innovation Challenge: Throughout the twelve-week program, all Hussmann interns will divide into cross-functional teams and compete with one another for the Hussmann Ideation & Innovation Challenge. Working with Hussmann mentors and leaders, you and your team will identify a solution to a provided problem statement. At the end of the summer, you'll present your team's business proposal to a panel of judges, executive leaders, and the organization - and possibly create a roadmap for Hussmann's next great innovation.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in school pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and data analysis tools using Excel

  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and demonstrate strong attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and eager to learn
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to relocate, if not local

The summer internship will run from the third week of May through the first week of August. These dates may be changed to meet the needs of the student.
