Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has an exciting opportunity for a college engineering student interested in joining the Bridge Division's Hydraulics team and furthering their design knowledge and experience!

Job Duties:

Under close supervision of a Professional Engineer, the Intern will assist in the design of roadway construction projects related to delineating drainage basins, determine peak flows with the rational and NRCS methods, and sizing non-bridge sized culverts using FHWA's HY-8 culvert analysis program.

Duties may also include:

  • Perform analysis of stormwater treatment and storm sewer design.
  • Review FEMA floodplain maps and prepare maps along NDOT projects in order to assist engineers with certifying project related to floodplain impacts.
  • Assist in the review of work of a broad scope, complexity, and diversity.
  • Participate in and document engineering decisions and keep project correspondence files accurate and up to date.
  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings when needed, as well as prepare for and participate in project field inspections.
  • Complete training aspects of hydrology and hydraulics topics as they pertain to roadway design.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Must be a three-fourths student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A second semester sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering with experience in the use of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).

Other:

  • Applicants must be at least a three fourths time student majoring in engineering or related field and be able to work at least 10 hours a week when classes are in session, 16 hours a week preferred.
  • Temporary full-time employment may be available during scheduled school breaks.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
