Intern Hardware Verification Engineer information

What does an intern hardware verification engineer do?

An Intern Hardware Verification Engineer assists in testing and validating hardware components and systems to ensure they function correctly and meet design specifications. Their responsibilities often include writing test cases, running simulations, analyzing results, and working with senior engineers to identify and resolve issues. This role provides hands-on experience with hardware design tools, verification methodologies, and debugging processes. Interns gain valuable skills in both hardware engineering and quality assurance, which are essential for a career in hardware development.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an intern hardware verification engineer?

As an Intern Hardware Verification Engineer, you will typically assist in developing and executing test plans, writing and running simulation scripts, and debugging hardware designs alongside experienced engineers. You may work with design and verification teams to identify and resolve issues in digital circuits or systems, often using industry-standard verification languages and tools. Interns also gain hands-on experience with methodologies such as UVM or SystemVerilog, and may participate in regular team meetings and code reviews. This role is a great opportunity to build practical skills, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and learn about the end-to-end hardware development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern hardware verification engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Hardware Verification Engineer, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture, and at least a bachelor’s coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with hardware description languages (such as Verilog or VHDL), simulation tools (like ModelSim or Questa), and version control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate verification of hardware designs, timely identification of issues, and successful collaboration within engineering teams.

What is the difference between Intern Hardware Verification Engineer vs Intern Digital Design Engineer?

AspectIntern Hardware Verification EngineerIntern Digital Design Engineer
Required SkillsHardware verification, scripting, basic digital logicDigital design, HDL coding, logic simulation
Work EnvironmentTesting and verifying hardware componentsDesigning and developing digital circuits
Industry UsageSemiconductor, electronics manufacturingSemiconductor, consumer electronics, embedded systems

Both roles are internship positions in hardware and digital design fields, often found in semiconductor and electronics companies. The Hardware Verification Engineer focuses on testing and validating hardware components, while the Digital Design Engineer emphasizes creating digital circuits. Interns in both roles typically require knowledge of digital logic and basic scripting, making them similar but distinct in their core responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: Systems Verification Engineer

Job Description

This Principal-level Systems Verification Engineer role leads system-level Verification and Validation (V&V) activities for a complex U.S. Navy weapon system program. The position focuses on requirements verification, requirements traceability through the Requirements Verification Traceability Matrix (RVTM), and system-level validation across highly integrated hardware, software, and modeling subsystems in a multi-contractor environment. You will own the verification strategy, collaborate closely with prime and subcontractor teams, and interface directly with government stakeholders to ensure the system meets all performance, safety, and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive system-level Verification and Validation (V&V) strategy for a complex weapon system program.
  • Own the creation, development, and ongoing maintenance of the Requirements Verification Traceability Matrix (RVTM) to ensure complete traceability from requirements to verification methods and results.
  • Define, select, and apply appropriate verification methods, including test, analysis, inspection, and demonstration, based on requirement type and system constraints.
  • Perform detailed requirements analysis to assess clarity, completeness, consistency, and testability, and recommend improvements where necessary.
  • Decompose system-level requirements into verifiable lower-level requirements across multiple subsystems and integrated elements.
  • Lead coordination and technical integration across multiple subsystem teams and prime contractors in a multi-team, multi-contractor environment.
  • Support Systems Engineering Technical Reviews (SETRs) and formal verification events by preparing inputs, presenting verification status, and addressing technical issues.
  • Produce clear, accurate, and comprehensive technical documentation that captures verification plans, procedures, results, and findings.
  • Present technical content and verification status to internal leadership and Navy customers, explaining complex issues in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Collaborate with government stakeholders to align verification approaches with program objectives, address concerns, and ensure compliance with DoD and Navy standards.
  • Work within highly integrated systems environments that combine hardware, software, and models to validate system performance and behavior.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of V&V processes, tools, and documentation practices to enhance efficiency and quality across the program.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTM) and performing requirements traceability.
  • Proven experience in system-level verification for complex Department of Defense (DoD) weapon systems.
  • Experience conducting requirements analysis and decomposition, including assessing requirements for clarity, completeness, and testability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multi-team and multi-contractor system environments, coordinating verification activities among diverse stakeholders.
  • Prior experience on DoD programs such as F-35, Navy systems, or similar large-scale defense programs.
  • Ability to interface confidently and professionally with government stakeholders, including presenting technical information and responding to technical inquiries.
  • Strong understanding of system-level requirements and their relationship to verification methods such as test, analysis, inspection, and demonstration.
  • Solid systems engineering foundation with specific focus on requirements, verification, and traceability.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Trident or Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) or closely related Navy programs.
  • Prior work specifically focused on Verification and Validation (V&V), beyond general systems engineering responsibilities.
  • Relevant professional certification in systems engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Active or prior security clearance, demonstrating familiarity with working on classified or sensitive defense programs.
  • Experience working in highly integrated systems that combine hardware, software, and models, including coordination across these domains.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for producing technical documentation and presenting to leadership and customers.
  • Ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary environment and build strong working relationships across primes, subcontractors, and government teams.

Work Environment

This role operates within a highly technical, defense-focused systems engineering environment centered on a complex U.S. Navy weapon system program. You will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams across prime contractors, subcontractors, and government stakeholders, engaging in formal Systems Engineering Technical Reviews and structured verification events. The work involves extensive interaction with system-level requirements, verification artifacts such as RVTMs, and integrated hardware, software, and modeling environments. Expect a professional setting with an emphasis on rigor, documentation quality, and adherence to DoD and Navy standards. Work hours typically align with standard full-time engineering schedules, with additional effort as needed to support major reviews and critical verification milestones. The culture values collaboration, technical excellence, and clear communication, providing opportunities to influence verification strategy and contribute to the success of a high-visibility defense program.
