Intern Hardware Verification Engineer information

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an intern hardware verification engineer?

As an Intern Hardware Verification Engineer, you will typically assist in developing and executing test plans, writing and running simulation scripts, and debugging hardware designs alongside experienced engineers. You may work with design and verification teams to identify and resolve issues in digital circuits or systems, often using industry-standard verification languages and tools. Interns also gain hands-on experience with methodologies such as UVM or SystemVerilog, and may participate in regular team meetings and code reviews. This role is a great opportunity to build practical skills, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and learn about the end-to-end hardware development process.

What does an intern hardware verification engineer do?

An Intern Hardware Verification Engineer assists in testing and validating hardware components and systems to ensure they function correctly and meet design specifications. Their responsibilities often include writing test cases, running simulations, analyzing results, and working with senior engineers to identify and resolve issues. This role provides hands-on experience with hardware design tools, verification methodologies, and debugging processes. Interns gain valuable skills in both hardware engineering and quality assurance, which are essential for a career in hardware development.

What is the difference between Intern Hardware Verification Engineer vs Intern Digital Design Engineer?

AspectIntern Hardware Verification EngineerIntern Digital Design Engineer
Required SkillsHardware verification, scripting, basic digital logicDigital design, HDL coding, logic simulation
Work EnvironmentTesting and verifying hardware componentsDesigning and developing digital circuits
Industry UsageSemiconductor, electronics manufacturingSemiconductor, consumer electronics, embedded systems

Both roles are internship positions in hardware and digital design fields, often found in semiconductor and electronics companies. The Hardware Verification Engineer focuses on testing and validating hardware components, while the Digital Design Engineer emphasizes creating digital circuits. Interns in both roles typically require knowledge of digital logic and basic scripting, making them similar but distinct in their core responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern hardware verification engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Hardware Verification Engineer, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture, and at least a bachelor’s coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with hardware description languages (such as Verilog or VHDL), simulation tools (like ModelSim or Questa), and version control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate verification of hardware designs, timely identification of issues, and successful collaboration within engineering teams.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for the transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be a crucial member of the Core Avionics organization within the Lunar Permanence business unit. You will contribute to the development and delivery of avionics products for Lunar Vehicles, including flight computers, I/O units, embedded controllers, and associated electrical hardware.

This is a hands-on product engineering role. Working with experienced engineers and cross-functional partners, you will support the development lifecycle from requirements and design through build, integration, test, verification, qualification, production, and sustainment. You will work directly with internal manufacturing teams and suppliers, support hardware builds, and perform bench-level testing and troubleshooting using electronic test equipment.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration by enabling affordable, safe, and repeatable spaceflight. We are looking for an engineer who is intellectually curious, committed to product quality and continuous improvement, and dedicated to safety. Passion for our mission and vision is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and lifecycle execution of avionics hardware products under the guidance of senior engineers, including requirements, interfaces, design documentation, build, integration, test, and release activities.
  • Perform hands-on hardware integration, functional testing, and troubleshooting using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, electronic loads, and logic analyzers.
  • Partner with electrical hardware, mechanical, embedded software, FPGA, controls, systems, test, manufacturing, and mission assurance teams to resolve clearly scoped technical issues.
  • Support hardware manufacturers and suppliers during fabrication, assembly, inspection, and acceptance activities; document and help resolve build discrepancies and nonconformances.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, including test procedures, test reports, requirements-verification evidence, work instructions, and issue-tracking records.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another related technical field.
  • 2+ years of experience in the design, build, integration, test, or verification of avionics, electronic hardware, embedded systems, or comparable complex hardware products.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, including analog and digital circuits, component datasheets, schematic interpretation, and basic electronic troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience using electronic laboratory test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies, electronic loads, or logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with engineering requirements, design reviews, and hardware verification or qualification activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience supporting digital, analog, and/or mixed-signal circuit-board design, fabrication, assembly, or test.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, laboratory, aerospace, automotive, defense, medical-device, or other high-reliability hardware environment.
  • Familiarity with requirements-management or product-lifecycle tools, such as Jama or similar tools.
  • Experience supporting environmental, acceptance, or qualification testing of electronic hardware.
