This is your opportunity to join AXIS Capital - a trusted global provider of specialty lines insurance and reinsurance.  We stand apart for our outstanding client service, intelligent risk taking and superior risk adjusted returns for our shareholders. We also proudly maintain an entrepreneurial, disciplined and ethical corporate culture.  As a member of AXIS, you join a team that is among the best in the industry.

At AXIS, we believe that we are only as strong as our people. We strive to create an inclusive and welcoming culture where employees of all backgrounds and from all walks of life feel comfortable and empowered to be themselves. This means that we bring our whole selves to work.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any protected characteristic, including age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, marital status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any basis prohibited by the laws that govern its operations.

How does this role contribute to our collective success?
As a Software Engineer, you will collaborate with a delivery team to build new systems and enhance existing solutions that support key business groups (e.g., Finance and Ceded Reinsurance). You'll contribute across the development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and post-production support, ensuring that solutions are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.

You will apply a broad understanding of (re)insurance industry goals and objectives to make informed engineering decisions and prioritize work effectively.
What will you do in this role?

The Software Engineer is expected to demonstrate disciplined development practices and uphold strong coding standards. The role involves designing, developing, and enhancing solutions that align with AXIS Capital's business needs while ensuring scalability, data integrity, and performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clear updates to project leadership and stakeholders on delivery status, risks, and key issues

  • Apply software engineering best practices within Agile delivery frameworks to build scalable, maintainable, and high-quality solutions

  • Independently determine implementation approaches for well-scoped to moderately complex problems; work is reviewed primarily on outcomes and key milestones

  • Solve problems that require adapting proven approaches and patterns, contributing to end-to-end solutions for business problems from requirements through production support

  • Design and develop robust data models and ETL processes using SQL Server and SSIS; collaborate with reporting teams and support SSAS/SSRS solutions when required.

  • Partner with Release Management to ensure deployments follow established governance and release protocols

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Business stakeholders, Program/Project Management, Information Security, Infrastructure, and Application Development

  • Develop systems that ensure high levels of data accuracy, auditability, and performance to support critical business operations

  • Serve as a technical resource within the team: contribute to code reviews, share knowledge, and mentor junior engineers or peers on tools, patterns, and operational practices.

You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities, and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.
About You:
We encourage you to bring your own experience and expertise to the table, so while there are some qualifications and experiences, we need you to have, we are open to discussing how your individual knowledge might lend itself to fulfilling this role and help us achieve our goals.
What you need to have:

  • 5+ years of experience in application development delivering scalable and maintainable solutions.

  • Strong expertise in ETL processes, including large datasets, data mapping, validation, and cleansing

  • Proven experience building and maintaining data integrations using SSIS

  • Advanced SQL proficiency, including stored procedures, functions, triggers, and job scheduling

  • Solid experience with the Microsoft technology stack, including Azure and C#/.NET (e.g., building or supporting backend services/APIs).

  • Experience designing and deploying RESTful APIs in Azure environments

  • Experience with source control (Git) and CI/CD tools (e.g., Azure DevOps pipelines or equivalent)

  • Experience in performance tuning, query optimization, and developing efficient data pipelines

What we prefer you to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field

  • Experience with DevOps practices (CI/CD, automated testing, release automation, monitoring)

  • Experience with API development and integration, including REST and SOAP-based services/integrations

  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities

  • Experience with SSAS/SSRS (or comparable reporting/analytics tooling)

Role Factors:

This is a hybrid role, requiring a minimum of three (3) days per week in our Halifax office to support team collaboration and engagement.
