Job Summary

An Environmental Intern may be assigned to assist in implementing and environmental management strategies to reduce risk to diminish or remove hazards. The Environmental Intern actively works with Business Units and HSE Professionals in their designated operating areas to implement, update, and improve the environmental management system and works to ensure CITGO remains a positive steward of the environment. 

Position available for Fall 2026

Minimum Qualifications

Degree / The minimum number of years of job related experience required by this job is:

  • Full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Sciences.
  • Must have completed 30 semester hours in the topics above.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration.  Candidates selected for employment must meet eligibility criteria to obtain a TWIC card.

Job Duties
  • Assist with daily environmental aspects of the business units.
  • Assist with the Business Units air permit management program.
  • Assist with the implementation of the SWPPP, and NPDES water permit programs.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Business Units hazardous waste management programs.
  • Participate in HSE meetings.
  • Interact regularly and frequently with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering at assigned areas to build rapport and to be aware of and assist with resolving environmental issues.
  • Develop and deliver environmental management training.
  • Research existing and new environmental regulations and technologies.
  • Participate in incident investigations, review cause maps, and ensure post-incident lessons learned and incident prevention strategies are implemented.
  • Provide technical support to the facility’s environmental teams.
  • Identify and establish leading indicator metrics that are tracked, trended, and used in a way to identify areas of concern, improvement programs, address risk/ hazards and ultimately eliminate environmental incidents.
  • Perform training, lead team meetings, compose, and deliver presentations to various groups at all levels of the organization.
