What does an intern economist do?

An intern economist typically assists professional economists in conducting research, analyzing data, and preparing reports on economic topics. Their tasks may include gathering and interpreting economic data, creating statistical models, and contributing to policy analysis. Interns may also support presentations, literature reviews, or economic forecasting under supervision. This role provides hands-on experience and helps interns build valuable analytical and research skills relevant to economics careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern economist?

To thrive as an Intern Economist, you need a solid understanding of economics principles, data analysis, and quantitative research, typically supported by coursework in economics, mathematics, or statistics. Knowledge of statistical software such as Stata, R, or Excel, as well as familiarity with data visualization tools, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns interpret data and convey findings clearly. These skills are vital for producing accurate analyses and supporting evidence-based decision-making in economic research settings.

You may collaborate with economists and analysts to interpret data, help build economic models, and participate in meetings to discuss project findings. The specific projects often depend on the organization's focus—ranging from macroeconomic forecasting to policy evaluation or market analysis—giving you a well-rounded experience that can help inform your career direction.
