Intern Distributed Systems Engineer information

What does an intern distributed systems engineer do?

An Intern Distributed Systems Engineer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems that enable applications to run reliably across multiple computers. Their work often involves writing and testing code, debugging issues, and collaborating with experienced engineers to solve technical challenges related to scalability, efficiency, and data consistency. Interns may also help with system monitoring and performance analysis, learning best practices for building robust and fault-tolerant systems. This role is a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and real-world distributed computing problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern distributed systems engineer?

To thrive as an Intern Distributed Systems Engineer, you typically need a strong background in computer science fundamentals, programming (often in languages like Java, C++, or Go), and an understanding of distributed computing concepts. Familiarity with technical tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and version control systems like Git is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for solving complex distributed problems, collaborating with teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technology environments.

What types of projects and tasks can an intern distributed systems engineer expect to work on?

As an Intern Distributed Systems Engineer, you can expect to work on collaborative projects involving the design, implementation, and testing of scalable, fault-tolerant systems. Your tasks may include optimizing data pipelines, contributing to microservices architecture, or participating in performance benchmarking. Interns often work closely with senior engineers, gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies such as cloud platforms, container orchestration, and distributed databases. This hands-on experience, combined with mentorship and code reviews, provides valuable insights into best practices and industry standards, supporting both your technical and professional growth.

What is the difference between Intern Distributed Systems Engineer vs Intern Software Engineer?

Job description

The Systems Engineer will support the development of innovative designs to solve challenging engineering problems across a wide variety of applications. This role provides high-level engineering support and leadership in tracking contract requirements and system interfaces, while playing a key role in preparation for contract milestones, milestone deliverables, and contract transition-out efforts.
The Systems Engineer will interface directly with the customer and a growing ATS team of engineers and designers, helping to strengthen the team's focus on Systems Engineering principles throughout the design process. This position is also expected to play a significant role in establishing and maintaining company processes and procedures, including configuration management, and quality control.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with Engineering team leads in the derivation, writing, and tracking of system requirements from Statements of Work (SOWs), ensuring final designs provide evidence of meeting customer requirements and expectations.
  • Support configuration management of projects by coordinating with the Configuration Manager, creating and maintain deliverable indices, drawing trees, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) as necessary.
  • Take a leading role in maintaining Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and facilitating communication between team leads.
  • Support Engineering team leads in preparing for and executing milestone reviews, including ensuring proper entrance and exit criteria are met and all required milestone deliverables are complete.
  • Track the status of contract deliverables and support project execution to ensure compliance with customer and contractual requirements.
  • Support contract transition-out efforts throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring engineering and design deliverables are completed and properly controlled with a focus on contract closeout, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Help foster and reinforce Systems Engineering concepts and best practices throughout the engineering design process.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of company processes and procedures related to configuration management, quality control, and related engineering operations.

Requirements:
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Desired background in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience developing requirements.
  • Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance.
  • Desired experience with Systems Engineering tools such as DOORS and/or CAMEO.
  • Desired experience in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
