Job Summary
The Intern position provides students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in local government operations through meaningful project-based work, professional development opportunities, and exposure to public service careers. Interns will support departmental initiatives while developing practical workplace skills, communication abilities, and professional knowledge related to their field of study and career interests.
This position is designed toprovidevaluable learning opportunities whileassistingdepartments with operational, administrative, technical, research, or customer service functions.
Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assistdepartment staff with daily operations and assigned projects
  • Conduct research, gather data, and prepare reports or presentations
  • Provide administrative support including filing, document preparation, scheduling, and data entry
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development activities
  • Assistwith customer service and communication efforts as appropriate
  • Support special projects and departmental initiatives
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Follow County policies, procedures, and safety standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFICFUNCTIONS
  • Assistwith the administration, configuration, and monitoring of County IT systems, including servers, workstations, and network infrastructure
  • Support helpdesk operations by troubleshooting end-user hardware, software, and connectivity issues under staff supervision
  • Assistwith cybersecurity initiatives including system audits, vulnerability assessments, and security awareness activities
  • Help deploy, image, and inventory County computing equipment and peripherals
  • Assist with Microsoft 365 administration tasks including user account management, licensing, and group policy
  • Support networking projects involving switches, wireless access points, firewalls, and VPN configurations
  • Participate in the evaluation, testing, and documentation ofnew technologiesand software solutions
  • Assist with GIS data management, mapping projects, or web-based application support as needed
  • Help develop andmaintaintechnical documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides
  • Support audio/visual and conferencing technology used in County facilities
  • Contribute to IT infrastructure improvement projects such as server migrations, cloud integrations, or automation initiatives
  • Perform other technology-related duties as assigned by the department supervisor

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current enrollment in an associate's, bachelor's, or graduate degree program in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Network Administration, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field; or a recent graduate within the past 12 months
  • Demonstrated interest in public service, local government technology, or a related career field
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats
  • Proficiencywith Microsoft Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment
  • Must be able tomaintainconfidentiality of sensitive government and personnel data

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Fundamental IT concepts including networking, operating systems, hardware, and software
  • Cybersecurity principles and best practices
  • Cloud-based services and productivity platforms, particularly Microsoft 365
  • Basic database, scripting, or programming concepts (e.g., PowerShell, Python, SQL) preferred
Skills in:
