Job description

Position Summary

The Electrical Intern assists the Maintenance Department with basic electrical maintenance and repair activities throughout the Housing Authority's residential communities and administrative facilities. Under close supervision, the intern gains practical experience in electrical systems, preventive maintenance, safety practices, and customer service while supporting licensed electricians and maintenance staff.

This internship is designed to provide educational and career development opportunities for students pursuing a career in electrical technology, construction trades, facilities maintenance, or a related field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential units and Authority facilities.
  • Learn to troubleshoot electrical issues under the supervision of qualified staff.
  • Assist with replacing:
    • Light fixtures
    • Switches
    • Electrical outlets (as permitted under supervision)
    • Ballasts
    • LED lighting
    • Smoke detectors
    • GFCI receptacles
  • Assist in preventive maintenance inspections of electrical equipment.
  • Help install energy-efficient lighting and electrical components.
  • Learn to read basic electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and work orders.
  • Maintain inventory of electrical supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized.
  • Assist in documenting completed work orders using computerized maintenance software.
  • Respond to routine maintenance requests with maintenance staff.
  • Observe and follow all Housing Authority safety standards.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provide courteous service when interacting with residents and coworkers.
  • Attend assigned safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an Electrical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Building Trades, or related vocational or college program preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver's license with acceptable driving record preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background screening and drug testing.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Climb ladders and work at varying heights.

  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Use hand and power tools safely.
  • Distinguish colors for electrical wiring identification.
  • Work in occupied residential units.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a technical college, trade school, apprenticeship, or community college electrical program.

  • Previous experience using hand tools or performing basic maintenance.
