Position Description
General Summary Description
The Diesel Technician Intern supports the maintenance and repair operations for Superior Bowen's fleet of trucks and heavy equipment. This position is designed as a learning opportunity for students pursuing a Diesel Technology degree, offering exposure to safe shop practices, maintenance processes, and equipment systems under close supervision of union technicians and shop leadership.
The intern assists with basic, non-bargaining-unit tasks that enhance understanding of fleet maintenance operations while ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements. The role focuses on learning, observation, and providing general shop support, not performing the work of a qualified technician.
Key Responsibilities
Learning and Development
- Observe and learn proper maintenance, inspection, and repair practices on heavy trucks and construction equipment.
- Shadow journey-level technicians to understand diagnostic processes, repair documentation, and tool usage.
- Participate in daily shop meetings and safety briefings to learn workflow and communication procedures.
- Complete assigned learning objectives related to diesel systems, hydraulics, powertrains, and shop safety.
- Assist with cleaning, organizing, and maintaining shop areas, tools, and workstations.
- Support parts inventory, labeling, and delivery under supervision.
- Perform basic administrative and logistical support such as filing work orders, updating maintenance logs, or staging equipment for inspection.
- Assist technicians by retrieving tools, materials, or documentation during repair activities.
- Participate in safety checks, housekeeping initiatives, and preventive maintenance documentation.
- Adhere to all safety standards, PPE requirements, and environmental procedures.
- Follow directions from shop leadership and union technicians; report any safety concerns immediately.
- Understand and respect union work jurisdiction and boundaries at all times.
Minimum Requirements
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and professional conduct.
- Strong interest in heavy equipment, diesel systems, and mechanical operations.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Basic computer skills for logging training progress and documentation.
- Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.
- Actively enrolled in a Diesel Technology program or related technical field.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn through hands-on experience.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions.
- Basic familiarity with shop tools and mechanical concepts preferred but not required.
