Pharmacy Intern

Job Description

Job Title: Pharmacy Intern

Department: Pharmacy

Reports To: Manager of Pharmacy Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:

Under supervision and final verification of a Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern is responsible for dispensing medications, drugs and other medications according to professional standards and practices. This includes preparing and maintaining all necessary records on prescriptions, patient charges and inventory, consulting with nursing and medical staff regarding prescriptions, ordering drugs and pharmaceutical detail, and handling any patient reactions, errors and complaints. In addition to these tasks, the Graduate Pharmacy Intern also initiates and follows quality assurance and safety policies and procedures while monitoring compliance with all legal regulations and accreditation organizations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Prepares and dispenses medication orders under supervision of Pharmacist and with final verification performed by Pharmacist.
  • Receives new non written prescriptions or receives any change in medication, strength, or directions of an existing prescription
  • Interprets prescriptions or medication orders for therapeutic acceptability and appropriateness under supervision of Pharmacist
  • Calculates correct medication dosages, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents under Supervision of Pharmacist
  • Engages in prospective drug review under Pharmacist supervision
  • Monitors prescription usage under Pharmacist supervision
  • Transfers prescriptions
  • Engages in patient counseling under Pharmacist supervision
  • Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and request of health care professionals and patients
  • Provides professional information and assistance to medical staff; participates in pharmacy teachings and service programs
  • Assists with inventory control of medications, orders supplies and medications; receives and shelves medications
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients and medical staff
  • Prepares reports and monitoring activities as directed
  • Completes special projects as assigned


Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of clinic practices, organization policies, pharmaceutical procedures and techniques, and pharmaceutical/medical terminology
  • Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weight and measurement
  • Strong understanding of medication and dispensing functions to check for accuracy
  • Knowledge of medical safety standards in regards to the manufacture and handling of pharmaceutical substances
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills; strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software, Microsoft WORD Processing software, and Internet programs
  • Strong reading and writing skills; ability to write and interpret basic correspondence, prescriptions, and instructions
  • Ability to communicate both effectively and professionally with location staff, patients, and the general public
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of practice and/or patient information

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be currently enrolled in a Doctor of Pharmacy program
  • Leadership experience - preferred


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current license as pharmacy intern in state of practice

Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing/sitting for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighting up to 40 pounds. Required corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
