Job description

Civil Engineer Intern – Multi-Disciplinary Design amp; Field Engineering
About ICE
Infrastructure Consulting amp; Engineering, LLC (ICE) is a full-service transportation design and consulting firm with expertise across a broad range of civil engineering disciplines. With an unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and service, we offer comprehensive solutions in transportation, structural, aviation, water resources, survey, geotechnical, and construction engineering amp; inspection (CEI). Our collaborative culture and technical depth empower us to deliver infrastructure projects that strengthen and connect communities across the U.S.
Job Summary
The Civil Engineer Intern will join ICE for a 12-week internship designed to provide immersive, hands-on experience across the firm’s engineering disciplines. Interns will gain exposure to real-world projects in civil design, construction inspection, field investigations, and planning. Depending on your interests, location, and our current projects, you may assist in areas including construction engineering and inspection, roadway and bridge design, stormwater systems, aviation (airport) infrastructure, utility coordination, site grading, geotechnical investigations and testing, materials testing, LiDAR surveying, and more.
This is an exceptional opportunity for students passionate about infrastructure and public service to learn from professionals in a collaborative environment and explore various facets of the civil engineering industry.
Key Responsibilities
Interns will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist in preparation of engineering design documents, plans, specifications, and technical reports across transportation, aviation, water resources, and structural disciplines.
  • Perform calculations, cost estimates, and analyses to support roadway, drainage, and bridge design efforts.
  • Support field inspections and construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services under the guidance of licensed engineers and senior inspectors.
  • Participate in survey operations using GPS, LiDAR, and mobile mapping tools to support design, environmental, and construction projects.
  • Collaborate on aviation engineering tasks, including airport runway/taxiway design, grading, and FAA documentation.
  • Engage in geotechnical field sampling and laboratory testing for soil, aggregate, and concrete, learning to evaluate foundation and pavement support conditions.
  • Utilize software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and OpenRoads to produce drawings and 3D models.
  • Attend team meetings, contribute to project coordination, and participate in multi-disciplinary collaboration with design, CEI, survey, and geotechnical teams.
Qualifications
  • Actively pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Interest in one or more of ICE’s core disciplines: transportation, traffic, water resources, structures, environmental, CEI, survey, aviation, or geotechnical.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation; experience with Civil 3D or OpenRoads is a plus.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and pass pre-employment drug and background screenings.
Safety Requirement
For positions involving field work, completion of OSHA 10 certification is required as a condition of employment. New hires without current certification must complete the training within two (2) weeks of hire. ICE will provide the training and cover associated costs.
Mentorship amp; Learning Opportunities
Interns are paired with experienced mentors aligned with their area(s) of interest. Mentors will:
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and goal-setting support.
  • Offer insight into career development and discipline-specific knowledge.
  • Introduce interns to the firm’s tools, processes, and technical standards.
Interns are encouraged to explore different departments and participate in learning sessions and site visits to understand how our disciplines work together from design to construction.
Work Environment amp; Hours
  • Standard office hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Primarily an office setting with occasional field work.
  • Internships are designed to be 12 weeks and are offered year-round.
Why Build Your Career with ICE?
At ICE, interns are not observers—they are contributors. We take pride in cultivating talent and shaping the next generation of engineering professionals.

You’ll benefit from:
  • A collaborative culture grounded in teamwork and shared success
  • Exposure to high-impact infrastructure projects across the Southeast and beyond
  • Networking and mentoring relationships that support future career goals
