What does an intern audio engineer do?

An Intern Audio Engineer assists professional audio engineers in recording, editing, and mixing sound for music, film, television, or live events. Their tasks often include setting up audio equipment, managing cables, operating recording software, and troubleshooting technical issues. They also learn about audio production techniques and industry standards while gaining hands-on experience in a studio or live setting. This role is typically designed for students or recent graduates seeking to develop foundational skills in audio engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern audio engineer?

To thrive as an Intern Audio Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of sound engineering principles, audio recording techniques, and basic music theory, often acquired through coursework or a relevant degree program. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Pro Tools or Logic Pro, as well as audio editing and mixing software, is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a collaborative attitude help you work efficiently with artists and production teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality audio, meeting project deadlines, and building a successful career in audio engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an intern audio engineer?

As an Intern Audio Engineer, you’ll typically assist with recording sessions, set up and break down audio equipment, and support senior engineers during mixing and mastering. You may also help maintain studio gear, catalogue session files, and occasionally edit or clean up audio tracks. Interns often get hands-on experience by shadowing professionals, learning signal flow, and participating in team meetings. This exposure not only builds technical skills but also helps you understand workflow dynamics and collaboration within the audio production team.
