Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in architecture firms, gaining practical experienceDesign-focused roles, often in architecture or design firms, involved in project development
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used for entry-level positions in architecture firmsUsed for design roles, sometimes at a similar level but with more responsibility

Intern Architects are in the early stages of their architecture careers, focusing on gaining practical experience and working towards licensure. Architectural Designers typically have more design responsibilities and may be more involved in project development, often with a completed degree. Both roles are integral to architecture firms but differ mainly in experience level and scope of work.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an intern architect within an architectural firm?

As an Intern Architect, you can expect to assist with developing design concepts, creating drawings and 3D models, and preparing construction documents under the guidance of licensed architects. You'll likely participate in project meetings, collaborate with engineers and consultants, and gain exposure to building codes and project workflows. This role provides hands-on experience with design software, insight into the full project lifecycle, and opportunities to build a professional portfolio. Internships are designed to foster growth, so expect regular feedback and mentorship while working on real-world projects.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an internship as an architect, candidates should have a relevant degree in architecture or a related field, build a strong portfolio showcasing their work, and gain experience with design software like AutoCAD or Revit. Applying to firms, networking with professionals, and demonstrating enthusiasm for architecture are also important steps.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Architect, you need a solid foundation in architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically backed by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward licensure through programs like the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help an intern architect excel in collaborating with colleagues and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for producing quality design work, supporting project delivery, and advancing toward full architectural licensure.

What does an intern architect do?

An Intern Architect assists licensed architects in the design and planning of buildings and structures. Their tasks typically include preparing drawings, creating models, conducting research, and helping with project documentation. They work under the supervision of a registered architect as they gain practical experience required for licensure. Intern Architects also collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet design, safety, and regulatory standards.

About TenBerke
We believe that architecture is never an end itself. It is a tool that turns what we have into what we need. Our projects lead to outcomes: the beneficial ways people use our spaces; how our buildings prompt agency; and how our projects connect us meaningfully to time and place, and to one another. We design projects to be the instruments of meaningful and sustainable change.
We design intentionally, with equal parts intelligence and creativity. We design boldly and are not afraid to lead our clients to dream big. For us, this means work that is not only idealistic, but also effective, navigating a nuanced path between the world as it is and the world as it might and must be. This is what gives our work its authenticity, complexity, grit, and texture, impactful at first glance and delightful over time.
