What does an intern architect do?

An Intern Architect assists licensed architects in the design and planning of buildings and structures. Their tasks typically include preparing drawings, creating models, conducting research, and helping with project documentation. They work under the supervision of a registered architect as they gain practical experience required for licensure. Intern Architects also collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet design, safety, and regulatory standards.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an intern architect within an architectural firm?

As an Intern Architect, you can expect to assist with developing design concepts, creating drawings and 3D models, and preparing construction documents under the guidance of licensed architects. You'll likely participate in project meetings, collaborate with engineers and consultants, and gain exposure to building codes and project workflows. This role provides hands-on experience with design software, insight into the full project lifecycle, and opportunities to build a professional portfolio. Internships are designed to foster growth, so expect regular feedback and mentorship while working on real-world projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Architect, you need a solid foundation in architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically backed by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward licensure through programs like the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help an intern architect excel in collaborating with colleagues and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for producing quality design work, supporting project delivery, and advancing toward full architectural licensure.

What is the difference between Intern Architect vs Architectural Designer?

AspectIntern ArchitectArchitectural Designer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or has completed architecture degree; may be working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture; may or may not be licensed
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in architecture firms, gaining practical experienceDesign-focused roles, often in architecture or design firms, involved in project development
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used for entry-level positions in architecture firmsUsed for design roles, sometimes at a similar level but with more responsibility

Intern Architects are in the early stages of their architecture careers, focusing on gaining practical experience and working towards licensure. Architectural Designers typically have more design responsibilities and may be more involved in project development, often with a completed degree. Both roles are integral to architecture firms but differ mainly in experience level and scope of work.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an internship as an architect, candidates should build a strong portfolio showcasing design skills, gain relevant experience through coursework or related fields, and apply to firms or programs that offer internship opportunities. A basic understanding of design software like AutoCAD or Revit and good communication skills are also beneficial. Many internships require current enrollment in an architecture degree program or completion of foundational coursework.

$85000 - $110000 per year | Milwaukee, WI | On-Site | Permanent

Project Architect - Milwaukee Based Architectural Studio A bit about us:

We are a 120-person, client-centric interdisciplinary firm headquartered in Milwaukee's historic Menomonee River Valley, with a project base that spans the Midwest and beyond. Founded in 1906, we've spent more than a century designing environments that empower the people who inhabit them โ€” from healthcare facilities that save lives to schools that inspire learning, civic buildings that strengthen communities, and sports and recreation spaces that bring people together. Our full-service capabilities span architecture, interior design, planning, structural engineering, civil engineering, MEP, and landscape architecture, all under one roof. We've earned recognition as one of the best places to work in Milwaukee, and we take that distinction seriously โ€” fostering a culture of curiosity, continual learning, rigorous design thinking, and genuine fun. We believe that a building project is a landmark event, and we treat every one of them that way.

Why join us?
  • Work across one of the broadest market portfolios in the region โ€” from healthcare and education to civic, sports, science & tech, worship, and industrial โ€” no two projects are the same.
  • Join a 120-person firm with the resources and diversity of a large practice and the culture and relationships of a boutique studio
  • Be part of a true interdisciplinary team โ€” architects, interior designers, engineers, planners, and landscape architects collaborating under one roof
  • Headquartered in a multiple award-winning, LEED-certified historic building that is itself a testament to the firm's design philosophy
  • Recognized as one of Milwaukee's best places to work, with a culture built around curiosity, professional development, work-life balance, and genuine camaraderie
  • Deep roots in Milwaukee with a philanthropic commitment to the communities we design for โ€” this is a firm that does meaningful work and means it
  • Shareholder opportunities available as part of a long-term career path within the firm
Job Details Key Responsibilities
  • Lead architectural projects through all phases โ€” schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding, and construction administration
  • Serve as a primary client contact, managing relationships with owners, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies
  • Coordinate with in-house engineering, interior design, and planning disciplines to deliver fully integrated project solutions
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables while maintaining the firm's high standards for design quality
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior staff and intern architects
  • Contribute to business development efforts including proposals, presentations, and client relationship building
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, zoning, accessibility standards, and sustainability goals
What We're Looking For
  • 5โ€“8 years of professional architecture experience with demonstrated project leadership across multiple phases
  • Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) from an accredited program
  • Architectural license preferred; candidates actively pursuing licensure strongly encouraged to apply
  • Proficiency in Revit required; experience with BIM coordination, Bluebeam, and Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Strong design sensibility paired with technical rigor โ€” you care equally about how it looks and how it's built
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present confidently to clients and collaborate across disciplines
  • Experience across multiple market sectors preferred; curiosity and adaptability are essential
  • LEED AP or other sustainability credentials a plus
