What is the difference between Intermediate Mechanical Designer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectIntermediate Mechanical DesignerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD drafting, project supportDesign, analysis, testing, project management
Industry UsageManufacturing, HVAC, product designAutomotive, aerospace, industrial systems

The Intermediate Mechanical Designer primarily focuses on creating detailed designs and CAD drawings, supporting engineering teams. Mechanical Engineers have a broader role involving analysis, testing, and project oversight. Both roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What is an intermediate mechanical designer?

An Intermediate Mechanical Designer is a professional who creates and develops mechanical designs and drawings for products, systems, or components, typically using computer-aided design (CAD) software. They have several years of experience and often work under the supervision of senior engineers or designers, supporting the design process from concept through to production. Their responsibilities may include preparing detailed drawings, collaborating with engineering teams, and ensuring designs meet technical standards and project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate mechanical designer?

To thrive as an Intermediate Mechanical Designer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in 2D/3D CAD modeling, and a relevant engineering diploma or degree. Familiarity with tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborative design environments. These skills ensure the creation of accurate, manufacturable designs that meet project specifications and deadlines.

How does an intermediate mechanical designer typically collaborate with other team members on engineering projects?

As an Intermediate Mechanical Designer, you will regularly collaborate with engineers, drafters, and project managers to develop and refine mechanical systems or components. You’ll be expected to participate in design reviews, share your CAD models and drawings, and incorporate feedback from cross-functional teams. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as your designs often need to align with electrical, structural, and manufacturing requirements. This collaborative environment enhances both personal growth and project success.

About Nord Quantique

At Nord Quantique, we strive to build impactful technology by relentlessly pushing our understanding of quantum science. We are an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, innovators, builders, and enthusiasts on a mission to make quantum computing a reality. Our quantum processors are designed to reduce errors in quantum computation to facilitate long-term scaling toward fully-fledged quantum computers. We believe it is our responsibility to deliver this transformative technology for the greater good of society.

Located at the heart of the beautiful Eastern Townships region in the province of Quebec, Canada, we develop our technology in the vibrant quantum ecosystem of Sherbrooke. Leaning on more than a decade of vertical integration of quantum hardware, we are leveraging a comprehensive pool of quantum technology and micro-electronic infrastructure to deploy our quantum computing technology.

Our current needs

As we scale up our quantum processors and supporting infrastructure, we are seeking a skilled and self-driven Mechanical Designer to join our Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Team. This role focuses on the CAD of the cryogenic dilution refrigerators setups, precision design of 3D qubit assemblies and structural and thermal analysis of these systems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop CAD of 3D cavity qubits and GD&T drawings, ensuring mechanical precision and manufacturability.
  • Explore mechanical elements of designs and manufacturing techniques in cavity designs to improve the repeatability of assembly.
  • Design and develop assembly procedures and fixtures for precise assembly of nanofabricated chips.
  • Design and document the cryogenic setups for dilution refrigerator systems.
  • Conduct structural and thermal analysis on the cryogenic setup to support the payload and thermal performance, analytically and numerically.
  • Support the organization of CAD libraries, revision control systems, and documentation to support long-term system scaling and reproducibility.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (Design, Quantum Hardware, and Nanofabrication) to iterate on designs.
  • Coordinate with external vendors, suppliers, and development partners to support machining, sourcing, and integration activities.

This is a dynamic role within a fast-paced, research-driven environment, offering the opportunity to contribute directly to the advancement of scalable quantum hardware.

Education and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc) or Master’s degree (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering or in related field with minimum 2 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Must have R&D industry experience, preferably within scientific instrumentation, cryogenic, space instrumentation, semiconductor industries, with a proven track record in interdisciplinary teams.

Sought expertise and knowledge:

  • Experience in CAD modeling and assembly design for precision mechanical systems, using Solidworks, Onshape or other advanced CAD software
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize designs for repeatability in assembly
  • Experience with revision control and documentation of CAD
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles
  • Excellent ability to deliver results within tight deadlines
  • Experience with stress and thermal analysis using FEA simulation software
  • Advanced level in English, to communicate with team members
  • Intermediate knowledge of French an asset

Sought profile:

  • Great sense of autonomy and dependability
  • Proficient in producing clear and concise technical reports
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, external vendors, suppliers, and development partners
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills focused on achieving company objectives
  • Willingness to learn and explore new concepts
  • Team-oriented mindset with a focus on cooperation and knowledge sharing within the team

Nord Quantique is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in its training, workplaces, and activities. We encourage applications from diverse backgrounds and traditionally marginalized groups.

Working at Nord Quantique

At Nord Quantique, you will be part of something special: working in a highly dynamic environment at the forefront of quantum technology development while benefiting from a vibrant ecosystem located at the heart of the Quantum Innovation Zone of the picturesque city of Sherbrooke.
