What is an intermediate developer?

An Intermediate Developer is a software professional who has moved beyond the entry-level phase and possesses a solid understanding of programming concepts, languages, and development tools. They generally have 2-5 years of experience and are capable of working independently on moderately complex tasks while also collaborating within a team. Intermediate Developers are often expected to contribute to code reviews, help with system design, and mentor junior developers. They bridge the gap between junior and senior developers, playing a key role in the software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Developer, you need solid programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent practical experience. Proficiency with languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and frameworks like React or .NET, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication abilities help you collaborate and deliver quality solutions. These skills and qualities are vital for building reliable software, contributing to team goals, and advancing in a dynamic tech environment.

What opportunities for skill development and career progression are typically available to intermediate developers within a software development team?

Intermediate Developers often have access to a range of skill development opportunities, such as mentorship from senior engineers, participation in code reviews, and involvement in more complex projects. Many organizations encourage continuous learning through workshops, online courses, or attending industry conferences. As you gain experience, you may take on responsibilities like leading small features or mentoring junior developers, positioning yourself for advancement to a Senior Developer role. Collaboration with cross-functional teams also helps broaden your technical and communication skills, further supporting your career growth.

About the role

We're looking for an Intermediate Software Developer, Full Stack (Python/React) to join our growing AI Engineering team and help build reliable, production-grade AI and data products for one of Canada's largest P&C insurers. You'll contribute across the full technology stack-from information extraction and LLM-powered features to distributed systems, frontend platforms, cloud infrastructure, and delivery automation

What you'll do here:

  • Work within a multidisciplinary environment that brings together data science, software engineering, actuarial science, business, and design.
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and operate reliable services and data pipelines in production.
  • Develop end-to-end information extraction solutions, including classification, OCR and document-layout processing, model-based extraction, downstream refinement, and validation.
  • Take LLM- and machine-learning-backed features from prototype to production by integrating cloud model providers and balancing quality, latency, reliability, and cost.
  • Design and own distributed system components, including queue-based pipelines, fan-out and fan-in workflows, backpressure, idempotency, failure handling, retry semantics, and safeguards against data loss or duplication.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across distributed pipelines using structured logs, custom metrics, and traceable queries that follow a failed request through the system.
  • Influence the AI roadmap of the biggest P&C insurer in Canada.
  • Build and maintain frontend applications and shared React component libraries in a monorepo, with a focus on TypeScript design, build performance, bundling, and production delivery.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform, including reusable modules, remote state, provider version pinning, and multi-environment configurations.
  • Design and operate AWS solutions beyond application services, including networking, load balancing, API gateways, encryption and key management, IAM, and log and metric delivery pipelines.
  • Design CI/CD workflows, including reusable pipelines, environment matrices, and production approval gates.
  • Keep pace with new technologies and apply them thoughtfully to improve your solutions.
  • Tune containerized services for performance and cost by evaluating resource sizing, concurrency limits, and actual bottlenecks under load.
  • Share knowledge with interns, data scientists, and software developers to help the team grow.

What you bring to the table:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or any combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Python, REST/ GraphQL APIs, AWS (S3, Lambda, Sagemaker or similar services).
  • Experience with machine learning and scientific computing libraries such as scikit-learn, NumPy, SciPy, Tensorflow, etc.
  • Experience with pipelines, Ingestions/automations.
  • Good knowledge of software engineering practices such as design patterns, knowledge of the development cycle and other tools such as Git, Jira, Confluence.
  • The commitment to be a great, collaborative teammate.
  • Unlimited curiosity and a passion to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to focus on vaguely defined issues requiring the application of a creative approach.
  • Strong communication, time management and work organization skills.
  • If you don't have experience in the AI field, a strong motivation to learn this new and exciting field.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English-speaking colleagues across the country

Nice-to-have:
