What is an intermediate architect?

Intermediate Architects are professionals in the architecture field who have progressed beyond the entry level but are not yet considered senior architects. They typically have several years of experience and are responsible for designing, planning, and coordinating architectural projects under the supervision of senior staff. Their duties often include preparing drawings, managing project documentation, collaborating with clients and consultants, and ensuring designs comply with codes and regulations. Intermediate Architects play a vital role in translating concepts into detailed plans and often mentor junior team members.

What does an intermediate architect do?

Intermediate Architects are often responsible for bridging the gap between junior designers and senior leadership. They contribute to project development by producing detailed drawings, coordinating with consultants, and ensuring that design intent is carried through construction documents. Collaboration is a key aspect of the role, involving regular meetings with project managers, engineers, and clients to address design challenges and resolve technical issues. This level is ideal for professionals looking to deepen their technical expertise while beginning to take on leadership and mentoring responsibilities within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate architect?

To thrive as an Intermediate Architect, you need a solid background in architectural design, building codes, and construction documentation, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and progress toward licensure. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, BIM software, and knowledge of sustainable design principles are commonly required. Strong project management, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering innovative, compliant, and successful architectural projects within deadlines and budgets.

SCB is seeking talented Architects to join our Chicago office. Weโ€™re a national, multi-disciplinary design firm with a focus on multi-family residential, adaptive reuse, academic, and aviation projects.

At SCB, everyone engages in design. Our team is agile, creative, and efficient. Our work is thoughtful, distinctive, and responsive. Weโ€™re proud of our diverse team and value the broad range of perspectives, experiences, and skills they bring to each project.

Weโ€™re looking for individuals who are passionate about design, collaborative by nature, and possess a solid understanding of building materials, systems, detailing, and construction methods. You will have the opportunity to work with a team of talented professionals on all aspects of project design and development under the direct supervision of a Project Architect and Project Manager. You will also closely collaborate with the project team, including consultants, to prepare design studies, graphic representations, technical drawings, studies, and other materials related to architectural design.

Your Qualifications
  • Accredited professional degree in architecture
  • 5-15 years post-graduate, full-time working experience in an architectural firm
  • Licensed Architect in the U.S. or actively working to attain licensure
  • A strong design sensibility and attention to detail
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of, and demonstrated experience with, local zoning ordinances and building codes
  • Technical knowledge of building systems, material assemblies, and engineering concepts
  • Proficient in Revit, Bluebeam, Newforma and Excel; familiarity with software programs such as Enscape, SketchUp, Rhino, Affinity and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Multi-family residential, Hospitality, Campus Environments, or Aviation project experience preferred
The Role
  • Implement project design philosophy and work toward the successful execution of the project through design and construction phases
  • Develop design and technical drawings, visualizations, and studies in collaboration with project leaders
  • Manage time and organize tasks effectively to meet project deadlines, including oversight of junior team members
  • Collaborate with the project team, including direct coordination with design consultants
  • Participate in team meetings and client presentations, working closely with multidisciplinary teams
  • Oversee all aspects of BIM modeling, mentoring and training more junior staff in a constructive and thoughtful manner
  • Research and promote opportunities for new or innovative system applications; proactively look for and implement processes to improve work product and efficiency
  • Demonstrate initiative in problem solving and seek guidance when necessary from team leadership
  • Engage with the project and studio team with a positive, team-first attitude and willingness to learn and contribute to the project and firmโ€™s success
What We Offer
  • Salary: $75,000 โ€“ $125,000 depending on experience
  • Benefits: We support our teams with competitive, comprehensive benefits including, but not limited to, medical, dental, disability, paid holidays and time off, and 401K retirement matching. SCB has an established flexible work environment, and we encourage our employees to lead healthy and balanced lives.
  • Professional Growth: SCB is committed to learning and mentorship. We offer robust coaching and professional development resources to support your growth, including training programs, mentoring, and reimbursement for licensing exams and professional memberships. We believe investing in our people is an investment in the future of the AEC community.
