What is an interior project manager?

Interior Project Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate the planning, design, and execution of interior spaces in residential, commercial, or institutional projects. They work closely with clients, designers, contractors, and vendors to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to the specified design standards. Their responsibilities include budgeting, scheduling, quality control, and problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle. Interior Project Managers play a crucial role in ensuring the vision for a space is realized efficiently and effectively.

How does an interior project manager typically collaborate with clients and design teams throughout a project?

An Interior Project Manager serves as a crucial bridge between clients and design teams, ensuring clear communication and alignment of project goals. They facilitate regular meetings to gather client feedback, coordinate design revisions, and manage expectations regarding timelines and budgets. This role often requires balancing creative input from designers with practical considerations from contractors and vendors, all while keeping the client's vision at the forefront. Strong interpersonal skills and proactive problem-solving are key to successfully navigating these collaborations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interior project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in interior design or architecture, and often a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit), project management tools (like MS Project or Asana), and knowledge of building codes are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage clients, teams, and contractors effectively. These skills are essential for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards while meeting client expectations.

Job description

SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
Hospitality
Rice Fergus Miller Architecture + Interior Design | Hybrid/Remote: Bremerton or Spokane, WA
About Rice Fergus Miller
For 40 years, RFM has committed its practice to projects that build and strengthen community. We are a B Corp Certified Architecture, Interior Design and Planning firm with offices in Bremerton and Spokane, Washington. We take sustainability and design excellence seriously while valuing a balanced home/work life.
Our Hospitality practice partners with Tribal Nations, private developers, and hospitality operators to deliver casino resorts, hotels, food and beverage venues, retail, spa, conference, and entertainment environments. From new developments and master plans to renovations, expansions, and ongoing capital improvements, we help clients create memorable guest experiences while supporting long-term operational success.
RFM offers competitive salaries, flexible hours, a generous benefits package including reimbursement for licensing/certifications, study materials for exams, and a host of other benefits.
Position Summary
This role is an opportunity to help shape the future of RFM's Hospitality practice while leading meaningful work for some of the firm's longest-standing clients. As Senior Project Manager, you will be the steady hand across a varied portfolio: guiding large, complex projects from first conversation through completion, and keeping multiple interior renovation and repositioning scopes moving with the same care and quality.
Externally, you will be the person clients rely on and consultants respect. You will build the kind of relationships that bring clients back and earn referrals. Internally, you will be a resource for the team around you, sharing what you know, creating space for others to grow, and helping shape what a high-performing Hospitality practice looks like at RFM.
We welcome candidates with professional degrees in Architecture or Interior Design who have successfully led technically complex Hospitality projects. Both disciplines are equally valued and bring important perspectives to our integrated design process.
What You Will Do
Build and sustain client relationships
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Hospitality clients across projects of varying scale and complexity
  • Guide clients through decisions with clarity, keeping projects on schedule, within budget, and aligned to their goals
  • Represent RFM in communications with clients, consultants, contractors, and jurisdictional staff
  • Prepare proposals, contracts, and amendments that set projects up for success from the start
  • Participate in business development efforts, interviews, and strategic pursuits that strengthen long-term client partnerships.

Lead projects with financial discipline
  • Manage project financial performance across a mixed portfolio, from large complex engagements to concurrent smaller interior scopes
  • Develop project workplans, monitor financial performance, forecast resource needs, and maintain healthy project profitability.
  • Anticipate scope and schedule shifts early; manage change with transparency and precision
  • Coordinate engineering and specialty consultants with clear expectations and consistent follow-through

Develop the people around you
  • Mentor less experienced project managers, sharing knowledge of project delivery, client management, and technical problem-solving
  • Give staff honest, useful feedback and recognize strong work when you see it
  • Help shape staffing and team structure within the Hospitality group in coordination with firm leadership
  • Contribute to a culture where people feel supported, challenged, and proud of what they deliver
  • Support succession planning by helping emerging project managers build confidence, technical judgment, and leadership skills.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional degree in Architecture or Interior Design from an accredited program; both disciplines are equally considered for this role
  • Ten or more years of professional experience; licensure (RA, NCIDQ, or equivalent) preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated track record of leading complex Hospitality projects: casino, hotel, food and beverage, retail, spa, and/or conference environments
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple concurrent projects while balancing client expectations, team resources, schedules, and profitability.
  • Experience managing projects across a range of scales, from large ground-up and complex renovation work to multiple concurrent small and mid-size interior repositioning scopes
  • Technical fluency in building codes, accessibility requirements, life safety, and jurisdictional coordination as applied to interior environments
  • Proven financial acumen: fee management, workplan development, earned value tracking, and project profitability
  • Experience managing and developing project teams; track record of high performance and staff retention
  • Skilled at client relationship management on large, multi-phased engagements
  • Experienced in contracts, scope development, proposal writing, and consultant coordination
  • Experience with project management, accounting, and collaboration software; familiarity with Ajera/BQE, Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and client meetings across the Pacific Northwest and nationally as projects require
  • Applicants must reside in Washington, Oregon, Montana, or Idaho, or be willing to relocate

Compensation & Benefits
We know our people are our greatest investment. RFM offers competitive compensation, flexible work arrangements, comprehensive benefits, professional development support, and opportunities to build a long-term career.
  • Salary range: $140,000-$170,000 annually, reflecting senior-level experience and market leadership. Placement within the salary range is based on experience, licensure, technical expertise, and demonstrated leadership.
  • Vacation Pay of 2 to 4 weeks per year, depending on years in career
  • Sick Leave of 80 hours per year
  • Parental Leave of 4 weeks, after one year of employment
  • Eight Paid Holidays
  • Eight hours of Paid Volunteer Time
  • Health Insurance: Medical, Dental and Vision with RFM paying 99% of the employee's premium
  • Cafeteria Plan: Flexible Spending Account, Dependent Care Account, Transportation Account
  • Lifestyle Spending Account allowance of $500 per year for remote work and wellness-related expenses
  • Long Term Disability Insurance paid by RFM
  • Employee Assistance Program paid by RFM
  • 401(k) Plan with match of up to 4%
  • Voluntary Life Insurance
  • Voluntary Long Term Care Insurance
  • Voluntary Aflac policies
  • Voluntary Legal and ID Protection plans

Note: Benefits are current as of the date of this posting and can change without notice.
