What is interior design experience?

Interior design experience refers to the knowledge and practical skills gained from working in the field of interior design. This includes understanding space planning, color theory, materials, lighting, and client communication. Professionals with interior design experience are adept at creating functional and aesthetically pleasing environments that meet client needs and adhere to safety codes. Experience can be gained through formal education, internships, or working on real projects under supervision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interior designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, spatial planning, color theory, and typically a degree in interior design or a related field. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as knowledge of building codes, is highly valued and sometimes required. Strong communication, creativity, and project management skills help professionals collaborate with clients and contractors while bringing innovative solutions to life. These skills are essential for translating client visions into functional, aesthetically pleasing environments while ensuring compliance and smooth project execution.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals with interior design experience when working on client projects?

One common challenge for those with interior design experience is managing client expectations while balancing budget and timeline constraints. Designers often need to creatively problem-solve when sourcing materials or adapting initial concepts to fit unforeseen limitations. Effective communication and collaboration with contractors, vendors, and clients is essential to overcome logistical hurdles and ensure the project stays aligned with the client’s vision. Additionally, staying updated on design trends and building codes helps deliver both aesthetic and functional results.

Exceptional designers don't look for jobs. They look for the right opportunity. For more than 70 years, Sheffield Furniture & Interiors has been the Philadelphia Main Line's premier destination for luxury home furnishings and interior design. As a family-owned company, we've earned our reputation by creating exceptional homes, representing over 100 of the world's finest furniture manufacturers, and providing our designers with the resources, support, and clientele to build thriving careers. We're seeking an accomplished Luxury Interior Design Sales Consultant with a proven history of luxury residential design, relationship-driven selling, and delivering exceptional client experiences. If you're passionate about luxury furnishings, enjoy working with affluent clients, and have proven sales success, we'd love to meet you.

This is not an entry-level interior design position. We are seeking experienced professionals who can confidently manage luxury residential design projects while building long-term client relationships and driving furniture and design sales. Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

Qualifications
  • Minimum five (5) years of residential interior design experience.
  • Luxury furniture showroom or comparable high-end residential design experience.
  • Documented history of proven sales success.
  • Experience managing whole-home residential design projects.
  • Professional portfolio of completed residential interiors.
  • Strong space planning and furniture layout skills.
  • Knowledge of SketchUp, Floor Planner, Illustrator, 3D Max or similar software.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
  • Valid driver's license and a personally owned vehicle.
  • Weekend availability with flexibility (no evening hours).

While we appreciate every application, this opportunity is generally not a fit for entry-level designers, students, recent graduates, decorators, stagers, architects, or general retail sales associates without luxury sales experience.

Why Experienced Designers Choose Norris
  • Represent over 100 luxury furniture manufacturers.
  • Access an established affluent client base.
  • Design complete homes-not just individual rooms.
  • Conduct in-home design consultations.
  • Work alongside a dedicated support team and custom window treatment workroom.
  • Travel to High Point Market and vendor factories for ongoing education.
  • Enjoy the support and reputation of an established family-owned company.
What You'll Do
  • Build lasting relationships with luxury clientele.
  • Conduct showroom and in-home consultations.
  • Design complete residential interiors.
  • Specify furniture, lighting, rugs, accessories, artwork, fabrics, and window treatments.
  • Prepare presentations, mood boards, and space plans.
  • Manage projects from concept through installation.
  • Deliver exceptional client experiences that generate repeat business and referrals.
Compensation & Benefits

This performance-based opportunity includes a semi-monthly draw against commission. Top-performing consultants consistently earn six-figure incomes, along with bonus opportunities, comprehensive benefits, professional development, travel opportunities, and a collaborative, supportive team environment.

Ready to Join Norris?

To be considered, please submit your resume with cover letter and portfolio.

Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared to discuss their recent residential design projects, annual furniture and design sales performance, and experience working with luxury furnishings.

Because of the level of experience required for this position, only candidates whose qualifications and professional background closely align with the requirements outlined above will be contacted for an interview. We sincerely appreciate your interest in Norris Furniture & Interiors and thank all applicants for their time and consideration.

If you're passionate about luxury interiors, thrive in a consultative sales environment, and are ready to build lasting relationships while creating exceptional homes, we'd love to hear from you.

Please include a cover letter outlining your interest in the role and any relocation plans if you currently reside outside the Naples, Florida area.
