What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interior Design Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, spatial planning, and materials, often supported by a degree in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as knowledge of building codes and regulations, is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, attention to detail, and client relationship skills are crucial soft skills for success. These abilities ensure that design solutions are both functional and aesthetically pleasing while effectively meeting client needs and project requirements.

How does an Interior Design Associate typically collaborate with senior designers and clients during a project?

Interior Design Associates frequently work under the guidance of senior designers, assisting with tasks such as sourcing materials, preparing design proposals, and creating presentation boards. They often participate in client meetings to take notes, gather requirements, and ensure that client preferences are accurately reflected in design concepts. Effective communication skills are essential, as Associates serve as a bridge between clients, vendors, and senior team members. This collaborative environment provides valuable learning opportunities and fosters the development of project management and client relations skills.

What are Interior Design Associates?

They support the lead designer by helping with tasks like researching materials, creating design presentations, coordinating with vendors, and managing project documentation. Interior Design Associates often have a background in design and a keen eye for aesthetics, and their roles can serve as a stepping stone to becoming a lead designer. They also collaborate closely with clients, contractors, and suppliers to ensure projects run smoothly and meet the client's vision and budget.

Job description

Interior Design Consultant - Furniture & Home Design On-Site • Full-Time (Part-Time Considered) • Green Bay, WI $18-$22/hr base + uncapped performance bonus - strong performers realize $25-$50+/hr
Our highest-touch client role: lead full residential design projects, from first consultation to final delivery, at a company that values the craft. This is not an entry-level position.
How we work - and how we don't. We're a team. Our salespeople help all clients, cover for each other, and help close one another's projects, because a great client experience is what we do. If you've been burned out by cutthroat, every-rep-for-themselves sales, this will be refreshing.
About Wenz Wenz is a locally owned, family-operated furniture and design company in Green Bay - 25+ years in business, focused on creating an exceptional client experience end to end. We're small and tight-knit; your work directly shapes how clients feel and what kind of company we keep building.
Requirements
What you'll do Our clients often arrive overwhelmed and afraid of an expensive mistake. You're the trusted guide who turns that into confidence and excitement. You'll own residential projects end to end:
  • Lead full design consultations - listen deeply, ask the right questions, build a clear vision
  • Create space plans, layouts, and full-solution design proposals
  • Guide clients through furniture, fabric, and finish selections that fit their style and budget
  • Own each project from first consult through delivery and follow-up
  • Manage your own pipeline and follow up consistently
  • Build referral relationships with builders, designers, architects, and trades

What we're looking for
  • A degree or formal training in interior design, interior architecture, or a closely related field
  • Hands-on experience running design projects concept-to-completion
  • A portfolio or track record you're proud of (we'll ask to see it)
  • Confidence in space planning and residential furniture selection
  • Strong, consultative sales instincts - great design earns the client, and you're still comfortable asking for the sale
  • Excellent follow-through and communication

Furniture-retail background is a plus, not a requirement - we've hired strong designers from residential firms, staging companies, and architecture practices. If you can read a room and build a client relationship, we can teach the rest.
A few honest details On-site in Green Bay. Our showroom is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, so schedule flexibility (including some Saturdays) is part of the job. We create schedules monthly so you can plan your life.
Benefits
Compensation & benefits
  • $18-$22/hr base, plus an uncapped bonus tied to written and delivered sales. Strong performers realize $25-$50+/hr.
  • Paid time off • 401(k) eligibility • employee furniture discount
  • Predictable, monthly-set schedule
  • Growth path into Lead Specialist and senior design leadership

Our values (we actually live these): Gratitude • Proactive Performance • People First • Ownership • Adaptability • Contribution • Elevate the Standard.
