Job description

Design Assist Specialist

9Wood is a leading North American manufacturer of custom wood ceilings. We help architects, designers, and contractors bring distinctive wood ceiling ideas to life with clarity, speed, and practical support.

The Design Assist Specialist plays an important role in that work. This position is a strong fit for someone with an interest in interior design, technical sales, customer support, and the construction process. You do not need to be an architect or engineer, but you should enjoy helping people clarify what they need, understand what is possible, and move projects forward.

Work at 9Wood

Architects and designers often need support when specifying a custom wood ceiling. Acoustical subcontractors also need clear pricing, installation, and technical guidance. In this role, you will support both groups, working closely with our sales, estimating, engineering, customer service, and project management teams.

We are building a stronger position in our niche market through what we call Custom Made Fast. "Custom" means designers can choose from millions of possible configurations. "Fast" means we provide reliable quoting, drafting, and fabrication support so projects can move with greater confidence and less friction.

Visit our website to see examples of installed projects made possible through this work.

What's on offer

9Wood is an employee-owned company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP. Employee ownership is one expression of our commitment to the welfare of our people.

No job or company is perfect. But we consistently hear from employees that there is something special about 9Wood. One example is our commitment to open-book reporting. Each month, we review the company's financials with employees - the good, the bad, and the ugly - so everyone understands the financial score.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive annual salary: $52,925โ€“$73,774, depending on experience
  • Paid holidays and PTO that increases with tenure
  • 401(k) program with all fees paid
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan retirement program
  • Medical and dental insurance for employees and immediate family
  • Health Savings Account and Health Reimbursement Account options
  • Life insurance
  • Commuter benefits
  • Continuing education benefits
  • Monthly financial meetings with all employees

About the role

This role is about more than helping designers actualize wood ceiling ideas. It is about helping customers find solutions that deliver strong value, are realistic to produce, and fit within 9Wood's established standards.

You will work with sales and design engineering to develop project solutions, answer technical questions, and provide warm, helpful guidance to customers and partners.

In practice, this means you will:

  1. Facilitate discovery and requirements meetings to understand customer needs and determine whether the project fits within 9Wood's standards and capabilities.
  2. Work with estimating, engineering, and customer service teams to help design and quote the specified solution.
  3. Provide clear and complete handoffs to project management, then help customers and distributor representatives set realistic expectations.

Skills and attributes that will help you thrive

  • Interest in interior design, architecture, technical sales, or construction
  • Ability to communicate clearly, warmly, and professionally with customers and internal teams
  • Practical judgment about what work we can and should accept
  • Negotiation and communication skills to respectfully redirect or decline work that does not fit
  • General understanding of the commercial construction industry and its challenges
  • Direct or related exposure to the architecture and design industry preferred
  • Experience working in a CRM preferred
