Interconnection Engineer information

What is an interconnection engineer?

Interconnection Engineers are professionals who design, manage, and oversee the processes required to connect energy generation systems—such as solar, wind, or traditional power plants—to the electric grid. They work closely with utilities, developers, and regulatory agencies to ensure that new energy projects meet technical standards and regulatory requirements for safe and reliable grid integration. Their responsibilities include conducting technical studies, reviewing interconnection applications, and coordinating with various stakeholders to resolve engineering challenges. This role is critical in supporting the expansion of renewable energy and maintaining grid stability.

What are some common challenges an interconnection engineer faces when coordinating with utilities and project stakeholders?

Interconnection Engineers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex utility requirements, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring all technical documentation meets regulatory standards. Communication with utility representatives and project teams can be intricate, as requirements may vary by region and change frequently. Being proactive in documentation, maintaining clear communication, and staying updated on evolving interconnection standards are crucial for success in this collaborative and fast-paced role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interconnection engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interconnection Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and grid interconnection standards, often supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering. Familiarity with power system modeling tools (such as PSS®E, PSCAD, or PowerWorld), relevant regulations (like FERC, NERC), and industry certifications (such as PE licensure) is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, project management abilities, and clear communication skills help you collaborate effectively with utilities, developers, and regulatory bodies. These skills are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant integration of new energy projects into the electric grid.

What is the difference between Interconnection Engineer vs Power Systems Engineer?

AspectInterconnection EngineerPower Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications like PE or EIT often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentUtility companies, renewable energy firms, grid operatorsPower generation, transmission, and distribution companies
Industry UsageFocuses on connecting new energy sources to the gridDesigning and analyzing power systems for efficiency and reliability

Interconnection Engineers primarily focus on integrating new energy projects into the grid, ensuring compliance and connection approval. Power Systems Engineers work on designing, analyzing, and optimizing entire power systems. While both roles require electrical engineering expertise and often similar certifications, their focus areas differ—interconnection engineers concentrate on grid connection processes, whereas power systems engineers focus on system performance and design.

About the Position

Our client is seeking a Project Engineer Solar + Energy Storage to support the development and execution of utility-scale renewable energy projects from early-stage development through construction and commercial operations.

This position is ideal for an Electrical Engineer with experience supporting large utility-scale solar or solar plus battery storage projects who enjoys working across multiple phases of project development. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with development, engineering, procurement, construction, utilities, consultants, and executive leadership to ensure technically sound project execution while helping optimize project economics and long-term operational performance.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the largest utility-scale solar and energy storage developments in the world while joining a highly respected leader in renewable energy development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support throughout the full project lifecycle, from greenfield development through commercial operation
  • Lead technical due diligence efforts for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects
  • Develop engineering specifications, one-line diagrams, technical exhibits, and supporting documentation for EPC contracts
  • Coordinate engineering activities during project execution, including technical reviews, issue resolution, and design optimization
  • Evaluate engineering alternatives that improve project performance, constructability, reliability, and financial outcomes
  • Support EPC contractor selection by reviewing technical proposals and participating in contract development
  • Assist with the specification, evaluation, and procurement of major electrical equipment, including high-voltage systems
  • Coordinate equipment integration between owner-furnished and EPC-provided systems
  • Provide engineering support for utility interconnection activities, including coordination with utilities and independent system operators (ISOs)
  • Assist with interconnection agreements, utility studies, and transmission-related technical requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with technical standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred; other engineering disciplines will be considered with directly applicable utility-scale renewable energy experience
  • Approximately 412 years of engineering experience supporting utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, or renewable energy infrastructure projects
  • Experience supporting projects from greenfield development (or mergers and acquisitions) through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations
  • Strong understanding of utility-scale solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage technologies
  • Experience leading technical due diligence activities for renewable energy development projects
  • Demonstrated experience developing engineering specifications, technical drawings, contract exhibits, and EPC documentation
  • Experience supporting EPC contractor selection and engineering oversight during construction
  • Knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems and major equipment procurement
  • Experience supporting utility interconnection activities, including coordination with utilities, independent system operators, and transmission providers
  • Familiarity with Large Generator Interconnection Agreements (LGIA), interconnection studies, and utility coordination processes is highly desirable
  • Strong analytical, communication, and project coordination skills
  • Stable employment history demonstrating long-term commitment and progressive career growth

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary of $150,000$200,000, based on experience
  • Annual incentive bonus opportunity of 2025%
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with company contributions
  • Generous paid time off and company holidays
  • Professional development and career advancement opportunities
  • Opportunity to work on one of the world's largest utility-scale solar and energy storage developments
  • Collaborative culture with an industry-leading renewable energy developer focused on innovation and long-term growth
